Matt Berninger and Booker T. Jones, photo via Chris Sgroi It was more than six months ago that The National’s Matt Berninger first announced the release of his debut solo album, Serpentine Prison. Now, he’s finally ready for all to hear it. Berninger has set an October 2nd release through Book Records, a new imprint he created with the album’s producer, Booker T. Jones. Berninger and Jones first collaborated on Jones’ 2013 song “Representing Memphis”. Later, when Berninger set out to make his own solo record, The National frontman identified Jones as the perfect producer. As Berninger told The New York Times last year, he “wanted someone who could corral nearly 20 guest musicians, and someone who could provide the late-night, timeless atmosphere” of Willie Nelson’s Stardust,...

Despite his fondness for far-right, anti-government figures like Alex Jones, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan seems to be abiding by stay-at-home orders. He’s even grown himself a quarantine beard (!) — which he proudly showed off during an in-home performance for Monday’s episode of The Tonight Show. Supporting his 2019 solo album, Cotillions, served up a delicate rendition of his song “Hard Times”. Watch below. Corgan’s Pumpkins were supposed to go on tour with Guns N’ Roses this summer, but obviously that’s no longer happening. On the plus side, it gives Corgan ample time to finish up those two new studio albums he’s been promising. [embedded content] You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. If there’s one positive to be had from this period of self-isolation it’s that there’s lot of music is currently being created. Earlier today we learned that Trent Reznor has taken a “deep dive into new NIN material.” Now, in a newsletter to fans, Lorde has revealed that work on her third studio album is well underway. Lorde actually began working on the Melodrama follow-up prior to quarantine, as her and frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff split time between studios in New Zealand and Los Angeles. Even after having to shelter in place, she’s “still working away — Jack and I FaceTimed for over an hour this morning going over everything,” Lorde revealed. Because of the current constraints, Lorde acknowledged that it’ll “take a while longer” for her to finish the album, but s...
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the cancelation of thousands of tours, including ones that hadn’t even been publicly announced. For example, Nine Inch Nails had planned to return to the road this fall for a series of North American dates alongside Savages’ Jehnny Beth. Now, NIN’s Trent Reznor is selling merchandise for this scrapped outing and donating the proceeds to charity. “I suppose I can let you know we HAD a tour booked this fall that continued and expanded ‘Cold and Black and Infinite’. @jehnnybeth was coming along with us. We were excited. I’m bumming myself out right now… We had some merch for that tour in production that we’re putting in the store with all of NIN’s profits going to local food banks in the cities we were going to play.” All is not lost: Reznor is using his ...
Girl Friday have announced their debut album Androgynous Mary. In anticipation of the August 21st release, the genre-fluid rockers have shared the music video for their lead single “Amber’s Knees: A Matter of Concern”. The LA quartet first gained national attention when they were named finalists in the 2018 Vans Share the Stage competition. Girl Friday followed that accomplishment with the 2019 Fashion Conman EP, a marvelous project that sounded like Robert Smith went surfing with Iggy Pop. “Amber’s Knees: A Matter of Concern” continues the exploration of sunny, guitard-driven post-punk. It’s melodically simple but structurally dense, with an intro, a couple of verses, a big shout-a-long chorus, a bridge, and an outro, all crammed into a tight three minutes. In a statement, Girl Frida...

For his 60th birthday, U2 frontman Bono curated a list of “60 Songs That Saved My Life”. As part of the project, he penned individual letters to each of the artists behind his songs of choice. Among those receiving the a handwritten note from Bono was Kanye West, whose Yeezus cut “Black Skinhead” sounded like nothing [Bono had] ever heard before.” Bono was actually in the SNL house the night “Black Skinhead” debuted in 2013. “I was a hundred feet away from your feet,” the letter begins. “Your eyes were shut so as not to be distracted from the words you had just written around the corner.” The letter quotes some favorite lyrics, and suggests that with this performance, “It felt like hip hop wanted the black leather jacket back from rock ‘n roll…. and the rock ‘n roll sil...
This past weekend would have marked the launch of a spring tour for Damon Albarn’s new orchestral project, The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream. But with people only just adapting to the idea of social distancing concerts, those shows have been put on hold for the immediate future. Instead, the Gorillaz and Blur mastermind decided to debut the his new work during a Boiler Room livestream session on Sunday night. Inspired by Albarn’s numerous visits to Iceland, The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream is meant to be performed with a full orchestra. Playing the songs from isolation, however, Albarn was accompanied by rehearsal tapes, which he noted were “not finished.” Albarn also spoke of the piece’s title, saying that its origins have taken on new meaning in the pandemic era:...
