Santigold has announced her new album, Spirituals, out September 9th. As a preview, she unleashed the defiant single “Ain’t Ready.” For Spirituals, Santigold recruited a list of contributors including Rostam, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Boys Noize, JakeOne, Doc McKinney, Psymun, Ricky Blaze, Lido, Ray Brady, and Ryan Olson. In a statement, the artist revealed how she got over writer’s block. “Recording this album was a way back to myself after being stuck in survival mode,” Santigold explained. “It wasn’t until I made the space to create that I realized I wasn’t only creating music but a lifeline. California was on fire, we were hiding from a plague, the social justice protests were unfolding. I’d never written lyrics faster in my life. After having total writer’s block, they started...

St. Vincent is going straight to “Funkytown.” Today, Annie Clark has unveiled her cover of the Lipps Inc. classic for the soundtrack to Minions: The Rise of Gru. Take a listen below. “Won’t you take me to funkytown?/ Won’t you take me to funkytown?/ Won’t take me to funkyto-own?/ Won’t you take me to funkytown?” she asks again and again with a healthy amount of vocoder over a bouncing, synth-driven beat produced by Jack Antonoff. The song will be featured in the upcoming sequel to 2015’s Minions, which promises to tell “the origin story of how Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), the world’s greatest supervillain, first met his iconic Minions, forged cinema’s most despicable crew and faced off against the most unstoppable criminal force ever assembled,” all set in the flash of the 1970s. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, The Smile unleash a devastating, melancholy rumination on living with the consequences of the world around us. It’s as if Thom Yorke decided about a decade ago to commit himself to releasing some of the most devastating music of his career — which is kind of like a Carolina Reaper deciding to be spicier, or the Mariana Trench deciding that it’s not quite deep enough. There’s “Dawn Chorus” from his 2019 solo record ANIMA, “Unmade” from the Suspiria soundtrack, and pretty much everything off of Radiohead’s ...
In just about the biggest thing to happen to Australia since it broke off from the supercontinent Gondwana, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala joined fellow Aussie icons The Wiggles on stage for a rendition of their unexpected collaborative version of “Elephant.” The lead single off 2012’s Lonerism, “Elephant” is the track that took Tame Impala from a regional rising star to a globetrotting festival headliner. The song gained a child-friendly second life last year, when The Wiggles covered it for Triple J’s Like a Version as part of the lead-up to ReWiggled. The new rendition, with its interpolation of The Wiggles’ “Fruit Salad Yummy Yummy!,” became an unexpected hit, even topping the 2021 poll of the Triple J Hottest 100. Flea’s daughter really digs his Grammy trophy — literally. As the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist noted in a new interview with KROQ in Los Angeles, he once lost his first-ever Grammy, only to discover months later that his first child Clara Balzary had been using it as a garden shovel. The anecdote came up as Flea attempted to explain how much — or how little — these accolades mean. “Put it this way, I’m grateful to win a Grammy, Grammys are awesome,” he said, “but after we won our first Grammy, like three years later, my mom said, ‘Michael, where’s your Grammy?’, and I was like, ‘I don’t know, mom, I put it somewhere.’” He continued, “Months after that, my gardener came out of the backyard in the garden and you know how the Grammy looks like an old record player with the horn on it? My da...
