That weird Pavement jukebox musical from earlier this month is part of a weird movie directed by Alex Ross Perry, though nobody, especially not the filmmakers, seem able to articulate what that means. According to a new profile in the New Yorker, Pavement’s label Matador Records reached out to Perry three years ago. The band sought a movie, but frontman Stephen Malkmus did not want a documentary. He “wanted to hire a screenwriter. But he didn’t want a screenplay.” According to Perry, “No one knew what that meant.” Perry decided to make something “legitimate, ridiculous, real, fake, idiotic, cliché, illogical,” he said. “You take the Todd Haynes Bob Dylan movie, the Scorsese documentary, the Pennebaker documentary, and the movie Dylan himself directed that everyone hates [Ren...

Johnny Depp reprised his swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow character from the Pirates of the Caribbean series for a video message to an 11-year old boy arranged by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The personal greeting was shared on December 11th via the “Kraken The Box” YouTube channel run by a young fan, dubbed “Captain Kori,” who is in palliative care after undergoing multiple heart surgeries. Depp demonstrated some of Sparrow’s signature “savvy” as he navigated the mysteries of the modern video sharing service to wish Kori “the best of luck” and declare that “I am your number one fan.” “So, Capt. Kori, terribly sorry I missed out on this,” Depp-as-Sparrow began. “Meant to say it, forgot to say it, didn’t say it, gonna say it now. Saying it, I’ll say it. I hear tell of something they speak ...

Nearly one year after quietly dropping a dozen live albums on streaming services, Pink Floyd have once again surprise-released another batch of live performances, this time containing 18 recordings from their Dark Side of the Moon era. The new collection follows the band from January 23rd, 1972 to December 9th, 1972 as they developed and refined their career-defining 1973 LP, which went on to sell 24.8 million copies worldwide and stands as one of the highest selling albums of all-time. Among the performances are the group’s four-night run at London’s Rainbow Theatre, three Japan shows, and US stops to Chicago and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Lizzo sleighed the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Elvis star Austin Butler. On SNL’s last episode before 2023, not a flute was stirring for her performance of “Break Up Twice,” from this summer’s Special, and her rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Someday at Christmas.” Twitter users quickly noted the singer’s nod to painter Annie Lee’s iconic self-portrait “Blue Monday” at the onset of her first song, while her flashy gold-and-silver ensemble for the latter positioned her perfectly as the gift that keeps on giving. Elsewhere in the episode, Lizzo appeared in a Please Don’t Destroy sketch with Butler. Watch below. For 25 years, Titanic fans have been adamant that there was room on the door for both Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) to survive the ship’s sinking. Director James Cameron, meanwhile, is positive that Jack had to die — so much so that he conducted a study to prove DiCaprio’s character could not survive the Titanic. “We have done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and drive a stake through its heart once and for all,” Cameron told the Toronto Sun. “We have since done a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie and we’re going to do a little special on it that comes out in February.” Cameron continued, “We took two stunt people who were the same body mass of Kate and Leo and we put sensors all over them a...
If Quentin Tarantino had his way, Adam Sandler would’ve played Donny Donowitz, otherwise known as the Bear Jew, in Inglorious Basterds. Tarantino and Judd Apatow appeared on a recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Bastards podcast (per Variety), where the director confirmed he wrote the part for Sandler, who ultimately had a commitment to Apatow. Tarantino and Apatow met through Sandler in 2000, when the former director had a cameo in Sandler’s film Little Nicky. Tarantino was already working on the Inglorious Basterds script at the time and had Sandler in mind for Donowitz, but the film didn’t premiere until 2009 — the same year Sandler starred in Apatow’s film Funny People. “I feel bad because when I did Funny People with Sandler, I wasn’t aware that that was the exact ...
