The Broadway adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous is set to close just two months after its official opening. The musical began previews on October 3rd, ahead of its premiere on November 3rd. The final performance is now set for January 8th. The decision to end Almost Famous’ run on Broadway came after the show received lukewarm reviews and pedestrian results at the box office, according to the New York Times. Like other Broadway productions, Almost Famous faced strong headwinds due to an overall decrease in tourism in New York City this fall and winter. (Earlier this month, the musical KPOP shut down just two weeks after opening.) Phoebe Bridgers has a lot of friends who are fellow famous musicians, and she brought out just a handful of them while performing at Jack Antonoff’s Ally Coalition Talent Show: Lucy Dacus, Weyes Blood, Matty Healy, Trey Anastasio, and Antonoff himself all gathered around the microphone with her at the benefit concert for a rendition of the “These Days,” the Jackson Browne-written song made famous by Nico. Organized by Antonoff and his fashion designer sister Rachel, the philanthropic talent show — which just made its in-person return since its last outing in 2019 — benefits non-profits dedicated to bettering the lives of LGBTQ+ youth. Its lineup was a surprise until the show began, but it certainly delivered. In addition to the Nico cover, Bridgers sang her epic Punisher closing track...
Foo Fighters fans must have been extra good this year, because Santa Foo Dave Grohl has dropped an extra special gift down the musical chimney in the form of a live performance of the rarity “Marigold,” his first such performance since 2010. “Marigold” was first recorded for Grohl’s solo project Late! in 1992. It appeared as a B-side on Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” single, and was released by Foo Fighters on the live album Skin and Bones in 2006, earning it the distinction as the only song to be droped by both of Grohl’s blockbuster bands. Grohl dusted it off for Letters to Santa: The 24 Hour Comedy and Music Marathon, which provides toys, basic necessities, and cash to needy families around Chicago. He followed that up with an acoustic rendition of “New Way Home,” then “Skin and...

Bob Dylan likes modern music so much that he literally wrote the book on it — or, at least, a book on it: the contentious The Philosophy of Modern Song. The legendary musician went into further detail about his own personal listening habits, however, in a new Q&A with The Wall Street Journal, revealing that his roster of favorite artists includes Eminem, Metallica, Wu-Tang Clan, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and more. Firstly in the interview, Dylan talked about how he first fell in love with music in the 1950s, turning to new-at-the-time sources like the radio, portable turntables, and jukeboxes: “Without postwar technology these songs may have dissipated and been overlooked,” he said. “The recording process brought the right people to the top, the most innovat...
A bevy of musicians will honor Joe Strummer on the 20th anniversary of his passing this Thursday (December 22nd) by busking in front of a famous New York City mural of the legendary Clash singer-guitarist. Featured artists include members of D Generation and Gogol Bordello. The annual “Gates of the West” holiday benefit takes place 6-8 p.m. at the painted Strummer memorial on the side of the bar Niagara on 112 Avenue A. If there’s rain or snow (currently rain is in the forecast), the tribute will move to the stage inside Niagara. Among the performers are Niagara co-owner and D Generation frontman Jesse Malin, Gogol Bordello singer Eugene Hutz, and the The So So Glows, plus a few dozen other artists. An after-party will begin at 8 p.m. at Malin’s new bar 96 Tears, right next door at 110 Ave...
If it feels like we’ve been waiting for Avatar: The Way of Water for over a decade to you, it’s because we literally have been. Delays on the long-awaited Avatar sequel from James Cameron have even thrown off new cast member Edie Falco, who shot her scenes so long ago that she just figured the film had already come out and just “didn’t do very well.” “I saw the first one when it was out,” Falco said during a recent appearance on The View. “The second Avatar I shot four years ago. I’ve been busy and doing stuff. Somebody mentioned Avatar and I thought, ‘Oh, I guess it came out and it didn’t do very well because I didn’t hear anything about it.’ It happens! The actor went on: “Someone recently said, ‘Avatar is coming out,’ and I said, ‘Oh, it hasn’t come out yet?’ I will never work...
