Jim James has announced a deluxe reissue of Regions of Light and Sound of God, his 2013 debut solo album. Ahead of its release on July 29th via ATO Records, the My Morning Jacket singer also shared the previously unheard track “Read Between (Begin Again).” Regions of Light and Sound of God (Deluxe Reissue) includes the original album alongside a bonus LP containing 12 rare B-sides, previously unreleased demos, and alternate takes. The 2xLP will come in clear vinyl enclosed in a deluxe gatefold jacket with new artwork. Pre-orders are ongoing. “I have changed a lot since then, many times over,” said James in a statement. “So, in a lot of ways, it’s like a time machine, thinking about these songs, remembering what life was like back then. What I have gained and lost since. It m...
Pearl Jam are expanding their latest album with Gigaton (Tour Edition), a new project that includes the original LP as well as 11 Gigaton live cuts. The album hits streaming services on July 8th and will be available as a limited-edition LP/CD combo in independent record stores, while members of the Pearl Jam Ten Club can order it as a standalone CD. Pearl Jam unveiled Gigaton in 2020, and like most artists, they’ve had a sporadic, COVID-willing touring schedule ever since. Earlier this year, when drummer Matt Cameron came down with the virus, everyone from Josh Klinghoffer, Richard Stuveru, original drummer Dave Krusen, and numerous young fans filled in behind the kit to keep the tour going — until bassist Jeff Ament got sick as well. In better news, the band more recently broug...

Neil Young has announced his new live album with Promise of the Real, Noise & Flowers, due out August 5th via Reprise Records. The studio set will revisit the singer-songwriter’s 2019 tour across Europe with the backing band in the wake of his longtime friend and manager Elliot Roberts’ passing. It will be available on CD, a 2xLP vinyl pressing, and a Blu-ray deluxe edition as a concert film. Pre-orders are ongoing. “Playing in his memory [made it] one of the most special tours ever,” reminisces Young in the LP’s liner notes. “We hit the road and took his great spirit with us into every song. This music belongs to no one. It’s in the air. Every note was played for music’s great friend, Elliot.” Advertisement Related Video To celebrate the announcement, Young also unveiled the live musi...
Marketa Irglova has readied LILA, her first album in eight years. Ahead of its August 19th release date, the singer-songwriter has shared the first single, “My Roots Go Deep.” Listen to the track below. A lot has changed since Irglova released her last album, 2014’s Muna; besides the obvious political upheaval and global pandemic, she got married and had three children. Subsequently, LILA reflects these changes, with an overall emphasis on love and acceptance. As the artist puts it, “Simply sitting with things I can’t change, rather than trying to solve them or run away from them, has brought me into a deeper place in my heart and I am grateful for that.” Irglova recorded LILA with her partner, the producer Sturla Mio Thorisson, and worked with string player Marja ...
THICK have announced their second album Happy Now. It arrives August 19th via Epitaph Records, and the Brooklyn trio have also released the LP’s first single, “Loser,” as well as dates to their upcoming fall headlining tour. The album was recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn and produced by Joel Hamilton, who worked with the trio of guitarist Nikki Sisti, bassist Kate Black, and drummer Shari Page on their 2020 debut 5 Years Behind. While Sisti refers to Happy Now as a “living diary,” the band isn’t too preoccupied in wistful hindsight, as suggested by song titles like “I Wish 2016 Never Happened.” Instead our former Artist of the Month are looking back to find the means to move forward. In a statement, Sisti shared, “Most of our songs lean toward optimism, even when there’s a lot of pain...
Swedish pop star Tove Lo has announced her fifth studio album, Dirt Femme. It’s out October 14th, and as a preview she’s shared the new single “True Romance.” The follow-up to 2019’s Sunshine Kitty was written “about me and my relationship with my femininity,” Lo shared in a statement. “When I started out as a writer and an artist, I used to view my feminine traits as weaker and would enhance my masculine traits to get ahead in life. I feel a big energy shift in my environment since then and this album reflects the various ways my feminine side has both helped and hurt me. “I’m a pansexual woman married to a straight man,” she continued. “I believe masculine and feminine lives on a spectrum in all humans. There are so many more interesting nuances than most people want to ac...
Alex G-has announced that his next proper studio album will be out September 23rd via Domino. It’s called God Save the Animals, and he’s previewing the record with the new single “Runner.” Alex G tends to loosely envelop his albums in broad metaphors and concepts, and God Save the Animals is no different. Though he references “God” multiple times on the record, he uses the term to embody faith as a whole and a means of connection among the human race rather than a strict religious doctrine. Longtime fans will also note that the album sheds Alex of his typical homespun grit, as he’s opted to use proper studios and a larger team of engineers for the first time. The result means God Save the Animals might objectively be his most high-quality record yet, but it still includes the odd...
Nils Frahm has a new album on the way. Music for Animals, the German composer/producer’s 14th solo album, is due out September 23rd via his own label LEITER. Today, he’s shared a preview of the record with the lead single “Right Right Right,” as well as a lengthy list of North American and European tour dates from 2022 all the way through 2024. Like much of Frahm’s work, Music for Animals is simplistic and meditative, while still feeling vast and full-bodied. At a whopping three hours, it could fall under the category of music Erik Satie famously dubbed “furniture music” — music that effortlessly falls into the background — although it’s still gorgeous enough to grab hold of your attention if you let it. Pre-orders for physical copies are ongoing. “My constant inspiration wa...
Santigold has announced her new album, Spirituals, out September 9th. As a preview, she unleashed the defiant single “Ain’t Ready.” For Spirituals, Santigold recruited a list of contributors including Rostam, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Boys Noize, JakeOne, Doc McKinney, Psymun, Ricky Blaze, Lido, Ray Brady, and Ryan Olson. In a statement, the artist revealed how she got over writer’s block. “Recording this album was a way back to myself after being stuck in survival mode,” Santigold explained. “It wasn’t until I made the space to create that I realized I wasn’t only creating music but a lifeline. California was on fire, we were hiding from a plague, the social justice protests were unfolding. I’d never written lyrics faster in my life. After having total writer’s block, they started...
Preoccupations have revealed their upcoming fourth LP Arrangements, which is set to arrive on September 9th. The four-piece also unveiled the album’s lead single, “Ricochet,” as well as dates for their North American tour this fall. Arrangements was recorded in two parts: first in a series of studio sessions in Montreal during Fall 2019 where most of the album’s bedrock instrumentation was recorded, and then in individual home studio setups over a period of 16 months amid COVID-19 lockdowns, where each band member completed their parts and tinkered with new ideas separately. Produced completely by the band, Arrangements was then mixed by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck) and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control). The extended, isolated sessions found the band reaching for more guitar-oriented tun...
