Alanis Morissette released her take on the holiday classic “Little Drummer Boy” on Friday (Dec. 9) via Epiphany Music/Thirty Tigers. For her rendition of the song made famous by the Harry Simeone Chorale in 1958, the alt-rock icon adds a flurry of floating harmonies, bell-like synths and the requisite snare drum as she rum-pum-pums her way through her cover of the 1951 yuletide tune. “Little baby, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ I am a poor girl too, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ I have no gift to bring pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ That’s fit to give our king pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ Ru-pu-pum-pum, ru-pu-pum-pum/ Shall I play for you, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum/ On my drum?” “I played my best for you. #thedrummerboy #happyholidays #feelingitall #loveyou,” Morissette added on Instagram alongside a look at the single’s cover art, whic...
This article originally appeared in the March 2002 issue of SPIN. Alanis Morissette is at one with the universe. Thank you, Canada. She wrote her new album, Under Rug Swept, in her native land on electric guitar in addition to her usual piano, and it’s a welcome return to pop after 1998’s murky, PMS-ing Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Apparently, the rock gods have been smiling on the 27-year-old alt-pop queen. In the past year, Morissette worked out differences with her label, Madonna’s Maverick; performed at a slew of charity concerts (pro-choice, clean energy, etc.); overhauled her personal life; and toured the Middle East. She even did a Gap ad. But, we’re happy to report, she still says fuck a lot. SPIN: This record is much catchier than your last. Sonically, it’s closer to 1995’s...

After singing “Complicated” with Avril Lavigne last month in Toronto, Olivia Rodrigo once again nodded to her musical roots last night (May 24) during the first of two shows at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, bringing out Alanis Morissette for a duet on the latter’s 1995 classic “You Oughta Know.” Morissette sang the first verse of the track, with Rodrigo handling the second before the two artists shared the chorus. “That’s truly the craziest thing that ever happened to me,” the 19-year-old Rodrigo enthused afterward. “She’s such an angel.” [embedded content][embedded content] Rodrigo and Morissette are already well acquainted, having interviewed one another for a Rolling Stone story in 2021. Morissette previously joined Taylor Swift to cover “You Oughta Know” in 2015. Rodrigo has also been pe...

Now that Thanksgiving is over, Alanis Morissette is getting into the Christmas spirit by sharing her version of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” The new version stays true to the original including the iconic Lennon-Ono bedroom scene. But in Morissette’s version, you see her cuddled up with her family. The visual also includes clips of her bandmates and their families. [embedded content] “It is an honor to cover this heartwarming song. The lyrics feel more pertinent than ever and this year has been a year of great resilience and adapting and feeling all the feelings,” Morissette said in a statement. “May this song serve as a big hug to you and your sweet families and friends. Everything is going to be okay in the end, and if it’s not okay, it’s not the end. 🙂 ...
Alanis Morissette and Taylor Hawkins paid tribute to a few musical legends and reminisced on their pasts during the latest episode of Apple Music Hits’ Alanis Radio. The longtime Foo Fighters drummer actually performed with Morissette on the Jagged Little Pill tour, joined her as the radio show’s inaugural guest on Monday. Throughout the show, the pair showed off their musical IQ as they discussed both Eddie Van Halen and Chris Cornell, among others. “We were just having our discussion about our youthful dreams about back in the day, but even before we actually got paid to do it,” Hawkins said as he introduced the episode’s first song. “...
Alanis Morissette is opening up about addiction and therapy. During a recent interview with The Guardian, the singer-songwriter called herself “such an addict,” citing “work addiction, love addiction and food addiction” as her vices and revealing she has suffered from an eating disorder since childhood. Thankfully, the ’90s icon has had a positive experience with therapy throughout the years. In fact, she credits it as a literal lifesaver. “If I didn’t have a whole team of therapists throughout my life, I don’t think I’d still be here,” she confessed. Though she’s doing well, quarantine has been tough on Morissette’s recovery. “At 3 pm, I might feel: ‘Wow, this is a huge gift, I’m so overwhelmed with gratitude.’ By 3: 15 pm, I’m raging. By 9 pm, I’m despondent. Iso...
Alanis Morissette’s new single, “Reckoning,” has a darker message than anything that’s been released from Such Pretty Forks in the Road so far. The tune confronts “predators and prey” and has an overall dark vibe that’s accentuated by a string section. Recently, Morissette and the cast of Jagged Little Pill shared an at-home video for “Smiling.” She has also previously shared “Diagnosis.” And to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Jagged Little Pill, she released a digital reissue of the record. She also shared an acoustic rendition of “Ironic” from a show in London earlier this year. Prior to the pandemic, Morissette was supposed to tour with Garbage and Liz Phair as part of the Jagged Little Pill celebration and in suppo...
Being stuck in quarantine can really make you focus inward, reflect and sometimes get emotional, and those are just some of the emotions that play out in Alanis Morissette’s new video for “Smiling.” Teaming up with members the Broadway cast of Jagged Little Pill, the visual gives us a deep look into how people are doing at home — with some beautiful choreography from frequent Beyoncé collaborator Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. From close-ups to silhouettes of figures by the window, this video aims for viewers to feel. And we really do. “Smiling” is off Morissette’s upcoming album, Such Pretty Folks in the Road, which is set to release July 31. She has also previously shared “Diagnosis.” And to celebrate her birthday and the 25th anniversary of Jagged Little Pill, she released a digital re...
