Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ Hits No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay

Burna Boy lands his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart as “Last Last” captures first place on the chart dated Oct. 15. The single climbs from the runner-up spot after a 9% increase in weekly plays made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored R&B/hip-hop stations in the week ending Oct. 9, according to Luminate. “Last Last” gives Burna Boy his first Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart-topper with his second career entry. He previously reached a No. 26 best with “Ye” in 2019. With its ascent, “Last” also halts the record-breaking stay of Future’s “Wait for U,” featuring Drake and Tems, which logged an unprecedented 14th week at No. 1 on the chart last week. Plus, the new champ brings a former R&B hit to the summit via a sample. “Last” prominent...

Even Fame & Stardom Can’t Take Away Tems’ Peace of Mind

Hearing Tems speak is as soothing as hearing her sing.  During our 20-minute conversation, you realize how cerebral and calculated the Afrobeats singer is. She doesn’t rush to answer questions: She pauses and then gingerly paces her way through until she reaches the goal line. Even when she encounters a less-weighty topic, such as remixing a song of choice, she lingers — before cueing up a response that makes you want to join in on the action and jam alongside her down Oxford Street.  “I would choose Bob Marley’s ‘Is This Love’ or ‘No Woman Don’t Cry,’ because those are one of my favorites,” she says reassuringly. “I’m in London right now, so ‘Is This Love’ is the best song to listen to when walking down any street in London. You should try it whenever you’re here, just to try it...

Pheelz Signs to Warner Records After the Viral Success of ‘Finesse’: ‘Right Now I’m Just Making Art’

Last year, Afrobeats zapped the stateside mainstream after the success of Wizkid’s breakthrough single “Essence” and Ckay’s “Love Nwantiti.” In 2022, more burgeoning Afrobeats artists find themselves in similar territory: Fireboy DML’s booming track “Peru” with Ed Sheeran is thriving on the Hot 100, while Olamide’s Justin Bieber-assisted “Attention” is bubbling as a potential hit. Now, producer-turned-artist Pheelz looks to throw his hat into the ring after signing a deal with Warner Records. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news With over 14 million streams on Spotify, his BNXN-featuring single “Finesse” is a carefree anthem, oozing with saucy one-liners (“If I broke, na my business”) and breezy melodies. How Afrobeats Artists Are Using Fashion To Tell Us Who They Are

This piece was created in partnership with Afro Nation. Billboard and Afro Nation recently launched the first-ever official Billboard Afrobeats U.S. Songs Chart, tracking the most popular rising new music in the rapidly growing genre. The 50-position Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, which went live last month on Billboard.com, ranks the most popular Afrobeat songs in the country based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of leading audio and video music services, plus download sales from top music retailers. When alté music, a genre defined by its inability to be conclusively defined as it moves through different genres and maintains a highly experimental form, began to enter mainstream Afrobeats music in the late 2010s,...

Omah Lay Talks Reuniting With Justin Bieber and Bringing More ‘Attention’ to Afrobeats Music

Afrobeats singer Omah Lay and Justin Bieber get the party started with their brand new collaboration “Attention,” which was released on Friday (March 4) via SIRE/Warner Records. The pair ride the rhythm of the sensual and vibrant Afrobeats crossover track’s sizzling hi-hats, bouncy percussion and purring pop synth riffs, courtesy of the song’s producers Harv (Bieber’s frequent collaborator) and Avedon, as the singers repeatedly coo in the chorus, “Show me a little attention.” Bieber packs in big vibes when he asks, “Should I drink up/ Smoke up?/ I need some/ freedom/ Freedom, ah! in my life,” while Omah effortlessly lets the last word of each line roll off his tongue to the point where it’s more felt than heard. The song is already being promoted to U.S. pop radio starting on Monday, March...
