Aerosmith Play With Time at 50th Anniversary Show in Boston

In Dazed and Confused, a movie that came out 29 years ago and takes place 17 years earlier, in 1976, someone declares that getting Aerosmith tickets is “the top priority of the summer.” On Thursday, as summer 2022 drew to a close, Aerosmith was again the hottest ticket around, celebrating their 50th anniversary with great panache before a hometown audience in Boston’s Fenway Park, a few blocks from where they started out. Has time collapsed? How does Steven Tyler, 74, still look and sound as good as he does, hitting the notes and making every lick of stage patter sound like a dirty joke? “Let’s pull one from our back pocket,” he asided to fellow Toxic Twin Joe Perry before a blistering “Mama Kin.” Later he yelled: “Give it up for our 50th annifuckingversary!” This is technically Aerosmith’...

Aerosmith Raids Its Vaults for 50th Anniversary Archival Series

Aerosmith was already planning to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year with a return to the concert stage, and now the group has announced an extensive archival video series, 50 Years Live!: From the Aerosmith Vaults. The project begins July 29 with the debut of Live From the Summit, Houston, TX, 1977, which will be available for a week on Aerosmith’s YouTube channel. Footage from the June 24-25, 1977 Houston shows was originally only meant to be seen on the arena’s in-house screens, but has been restored by key members of Aerosmith’s team for this new edition. The concert was part of the band’s tour in support of the previous year’s album Rocks and includes a performance of “Draw the Line,” the title track of the album that would be released six months later. Starting Aug. 5 with Live...

Aerosmith Cancel Summer Las Vegas Residency After Steven Tyler Enters Rehab

Aerosmith‘s June and July Deuces Are Wild Las Vegas residency dates at Dolby Live at Park MGM have been canceled after singer Steven Tyler checked into a drug rehabilitation facility. The band shared the news on their social media accounts. The hope is for Tyler to be back in action in time for a fall touring leg that begins Sept. 4 in Bangor, Me. As many of you know, our beloved brother Steven has worked on his sobriety for many years. After foot surgery to prepare for the stage and the necessity of pain management during the process, he has recently relapsed and voluntarily entered a treatment program to concentrate on his health and recovery. We are truly sorry to inform our fans and friends that we must cancel our first set of Las Vegas Residency dates this June and July while he...

Joe Perry on Aerosmith’s Upcoming Las Vegas Residency, Their Underrated ’70s Output

Aerosmith started whatever day Steven walked in the door, says Joe Perry, his Boston accent flattening those r’s into ah’s. As in Steven Ty-lah.  It’s refreshing that after 50 years in one of the most successful bands in history, Perry still sounds like he really doesn’t give a fuck. Like he would be just as content sitting on the beach, reading Lincoln Child novels with his wife Billie (“it gives us something to talk about”) at their new home south of Tampa — as doing the whole guitar-god thing. His aloofness is either a facade or a defense mechanism he’s adopted to stay sane in a band he once quit for caring about too much (more on that later.) Perry returned to Aerosmith in the ’80s, but by then the MTV music-video era was in full swing. The band never returned to that gritty, blue...

Aerosmith to Release Unarchived 1971 Rehearsal Recording The Road Starts Hear

With some thorough digging through their archives this year, Aerosmith unearthed a previously unheard 1971 rehearsal recording. They just announced they are releasing the session as a record, Aerosmith — 1971: The Road Starts Hear, set to release on Record Store Day, November 26. As an early treat, the legendary band unveiled the record’s version of “Movin’ Out” today. [embedded content][embedded content] Aerosmith — 1971: The Road Starts Hear was recently discovered in the Aerosmith vaults, with its original tape having been untouched for decades. The newly refurbished record was produced by Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Steve Berkowitz, and even includes a nascent version of “Dream On.” The Record Store Day release will offer The Road Starts Hear on vinyl and...

The Four Weirdest Bands From the 1970s

Doug Brod has always wanted to write a book about music. It makes sense. He is a former SPIN editor in chief and has worked at Atlantic Records. But Brod wanted to find an angle that “has never been covered before and would actually surprise people and shed new light on something.” He does that splendidly in They Just Seem a Little Weird: How Kiss, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, and Starz Remade Rock and Roll. Brod has always been a fan of ‘70s hard rock bands and these four are his favorite ones. “I’ve seen Cheap Trick probably 52 times. I’ve seen KISS a number of times, and Aerosmith and Starz, I’ve seen them a lot.” After doing some research, he found the connection between these four groups. “All of them are represented in a 1978 Gene Simmons solo album. In ’78, when KISS did four solo albums...

Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and More Demand Clearance for Campaign Songs

Pearl Jam, R.E.M. Sia, Lorde and more have joined forces with the Artists Rights Alliance to demand that the political parties “establish clear policies requiring campaigns to seek the consent of featured recording artists, songwriters, and copyright owners before publicly using their music in a political or campaign setting,” the Artist Rights Alliance announce in a statement. The letter also points out “the fundamental right of music creators to decide who can use their music and on what terms.” And if they do not comply, the political parties risk legal action. The ARA furthered their point in the following statement: “We’ve seen so many artists and estates dragged into politics against their will and forced to take aggressive action to prohibit the use of their music – usually songs th...

Ted Templeman Is the Most Interesting Producer in Rock

The ubiquitous advertising campaign featuring “the most interesting man in the world” got it wrong. The most interesting man is indeed a debonair gray-haired gentleman, but he’s real: Ted Templeman, record producer of classics from Van Halen, Van Morrison, stellar non-Van’s including Captain Beefheart, The Doobie Brothers, Bette Midler, and many more. The 77-year-old Santa Cruz, California, native was a revered record executive and is a multi-instrumentalist, avid history buff and sublime teller of tales. There’s the one about, how, in 1969, after a gig with his band Harper’s Bizarre [they had a hit with a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy)”] their TWA flight to San Francisco was hijacked. Understandably, Templeman still dislikes flying. There ar...
