Just a year after introducing an expansion, the leading dance music conference is introducing its very first artist residencies. Among the first to be announced is Tamara Shogaolu, an award-winning director who will showcase her transformation of the Westerkerk church into a Panama rainforest. Label parties are an integral part of the Amsterdam Dance Event, offering imprints a coveted chance to showcase their artists. But despite its huge significance in the local Dutch music community, Nicky Romero‘s Protocol Recordings had yet to host their own label party at ADE. EDM.com sat down with Romero and Protocol’s A&R Director, Jorik Van de Pol, to chat about the milestone for the record label and learn more about the DJ’s various other ventures. EDM.com: Nicky, how are you feeling tonight? Nicky Romero: I’m feeling good. I’m a little—I don’t want to say nervous—but excited in a way. All of my friends and family are here. Literally, all my close friends and the people that mean a lot to me are here and normally when you play a show, it’s quite professional, but ...

For over 25 years, the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) has been recognized as the most influential gathering for the electronic dance music industry. Hundreds of thousands of people from around the world come together for the massive summit and ADE Festival, which take over Amsterdam every October. In the wake of the region’s #UnmuteUs protests, which were carried out in response to the Dutch government’s restrictions on nightlife and music festivals instated weeks before ADE 2021, the conference’s organizers managed to produce another wildly successful event. Opting to ax the conference portion, they gave attendees just what they needed: dance music hedonism. Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) has announced it’ll be returning in 2022. The event, scheduled for October 19th to 23rd, will also be bringing back its daytime business conference. 2021’s ADE exceeded expectations and is considered one of the most significant iterations in the organization’s history. It celebrated 25 years in the wake of the #UnmuteUs protests, which attracted tens of thousands in the streets of Amsterdam to speak out against the Dutch government’s clamp on the region’s music festivals. “Given the role that ADE fulfilled this year, it was perhaps the most important edition in its history,” according to Dutch newspaper Volkskrant. As the 2021 Amsterdam Dance Event drew to a close, Hardwell threw in a twist few saw coming. The Dutch dance music icon, who is still officially on a hiatus—where he’s remained since 2018—broke trend and appeared with some of his Revealed Recordings artists onstage at the label’s showcase event. “This is not official yet, but he’s coming, he’s coming,” KAAZE elatedly teased on the mic as Hardwell joined him onstage. In a clip posted to Instagram, Hardwell is seen jumping around energetically on stage to the sounds of Ran-D’s hardstyle thriller, “Zombie.” At one point Hardwell is overcome with emotion, visibly tearing up as he looks out across the crowd. “I fucking miss you guys so much,” he said, addressi...
Despite overwhelming adversity due to COVID-19, ADE Festival‘s organizers have been steadfast in their belief that the show must go on. It now appears that their efforts have been well spent. This week, they confirmed that more than 250 in-person shows across 90+ venues will take place during the event’s upcoming 2021 edition, scheduled for October 13-16. This development follows a recent loosening of COVID-19 mitigation measures in the Netherlands, including an official end to social distancing on September 25th. Still, nightlife establishments are being held to a strict midnight curfew so ADE Festival will be held between the hours of 6AM and midnight. Patrons will also be required to show proof of vaccination or provide a negative COVID-19 tes...
Prospective attendees of the 2021 ADE Festival can safely plan accordingly after organizers announced they’re moving forward with the event in light of new regulations by the Dutch government. The news arrives on the heels of an announcement by Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who said in a press conference yesterday that social distancing will end in the Netherlands on September 25th. Despite new COVID-19 regulations forcing clubs, bars, restaurants, and other nightlife businesses to shut down by midnight, ADE Festival will forge on as planned from October 13th to 17th. Rutte also noted that the country will begin mandating coronavirus access passes on the 25th, when patrons must provide proof of vaccination or a negative test within 24 hours. “The risk still is not gone,&...

The 2021 edition of Amsterdam Dance Event, the world’s premier electronic music summit, is in jeopardy after the Dutch government’s latest clamp on nightlife. Amid a surge of COVID-19 cases in the Netherlands, Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge organized a press conference last week to announce that Dutch nightclubs must remain shuttered until November 1st. “I realize that this is again a hard message and that more was hoped for,” Rutte said. “The work in these sectors can continue, but with one hand tied behind their back for the time being.” ADE is scheduled for October 13-17, painting a grim picture for what was supposed to be the event’s triumphant return after going virtual in 2020. Organizers recently c...
