We all know Fred again.. is a gifted music producer. But it’s actually his humanity which is his greatest weapon. After being starved for connection throughout the isolation of the pandemic, our hunger for genuine bonds is ravenous. And no one is able to cultivate them with their music quite like Fred, a master of unfiltered storytelling whose new album, Actual Life 3, is a reminder to imbue color in life’s grey moments. AL3 is a microcosm of Fred’s profound ability to turn life’s happenstances into visceral dance music. Interpolating samples from real-life encounters, transcendent songwriting sessions and even random videos sent by friends, the album is a collage of the mementos he’s collected during his breakthrough year. For some reason, musicians are still expected to masquerade as doppelgängers of themselves—cringey caricatures sharing manufactured moments through the vacuous engines of TikTok. While “Bleu” is often minimal in its production, the latest brick in Fred’s Actual Life 3 album saga is more evidence he’s owning a lane that is uniquely his own. The light and airy constitution of “Bleu” is driven by feathery synths, which are buoyed by distorted vocal swirls and pumping drums. Lyrically, the track forecasts a tepidly optimistic outlook by way of a sticky, memorable hook. Check out the off...
Fred again.. is, well, at it again. The groundbreaking music producer and DJ has announced the third installment of his Actual Life trilogy, Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9 2022), and dropped a single to hold fans over before the album’s official release, October 28th. The single, “Danielle (smile on my face),” samples 070 Shake’s “Nice To Have,” one of the most popular tracks in the famed artist’s discography. It features snappy percussive elements and a pulsing bassline, which frenetically flutters like a fish out of water and pairs with haunting sound design for a deeply visceral record.
