9 Reasons to Watch Red Notice, a Movie Where Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds Do Art Crime Together

Got to say this for Red Notice — it knows exactly what kind of a movie it is: a mashup of a classic caper tale and Indiana Jones that’s fully aware of how the star power involved will draw people in, and thus makes sure to put said stars (Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot) front and center. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber also makes sure that all 118 minutes of the film move along at a brisk pace, with plenty of action set-pieces, twists, and heist hijinks along the way. Things begin with notorious art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) attempting to steal one of the three legendary (and incredibly valuable) eggs of Cleopatra, with special agent John Hartley (Johnson) determined to track him down and stop him, building up to a globe-trotting adventure packed with legitimately laugh-o...

Splat! Eternals Becomes First Marvel Movie Certified Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes

Marvel had been on a 25-movie streak of good reviews, and you might’ve thought that streak was as inevitable as Thanos. But the critics have spoken about the new film Eternals, and now more than Thanos has snapped. Eternals has dipped below the 60% Fresh mark on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, becoming the first flick in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to earn the dreaded green splat. Rotten Tomatoes is a far-from-perfect website, though it’s influential enough that even people who hate it have to reckon with its scores. It sets 60% as the red line between fresh and rotten, and as of this writing, Chloé Zhao’s Eternals sits at 57%, far below the previous worst-reviewed MCU entries The Incredible Hulk (67% fresh) and Thor: The Dark World (66% fresh)...

And Shepards they shall be: Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery will reunite for The Boondock Saints III, a sequel to The Boondock Saints (1999) and The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009). As Deadline reports, Troy Duffy, who wrote and directed the first installments, returns to the director’s chair with a script co-written by Flanery. The franchise began with a violent revelation in 1999, as fraternal twins Connor McManus (Flanery) and Murphy MacManus (Reed) decided to rid Boston of crime after killing a pair of Russian mobsters in self-defense. The sequel found them returning to their hometown after being framed for a crime they hadn’t committed, and it ended with them locked in prison. Film three will be produced by Impossible Dream Entertainment,...

NYFF Review: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Is Spectacular — And Spectacularly Underwhelming

This review is part of our coverage of the 2021 New York Film Festival. The Pitch: Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel Dune gets its second big-screen treatment. The first was a notorious misfire directed by David Lynch, who famously disowned the final film; the newer version is from Denis Villeneuve, who has experience with sci-fi both emotionally intimate (Arrival) and storied in its nerdy history (Blade Runner 2049). Though the politics and world-building of the Dune world can seem obtuse — the names alone present a challenge for the less sci-fi-inclined — its story will also have a familiar ring for anyone who’s absorbed a few of the many works the novel influenced. No Time to Die Offers a Thrilling Swan Song to Daniel Craig’s 007: Review

The Pitch: After James Bond (Daniel Craig) left MI6 after the events of Spectre, he attempts to leave his past — and that of his new paramour, Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) — behind him. Reluctantly, Bond re-enters the world of spycraft and intrigue, now competing with MI6 and the new 007 (Lashana Lynch) to track down the virus and stave off global genocide — and close a few holes in his personal story along the way as well. A storm is brewing and bodies fall like drops of rain in the new red band trailer for The King’s Man. The film blasts into theaters December 22nd. The NSFW teaser sets the stage in the early 20th century, with Ralph Fiennes’ Orlando Oxford recruiting none other than Rasputin — yes, that Rasputin — to help him gain an audience with the Russian Tsar. “I only make decisions when my stomach is full or my balls are empty,” deadpans Rhys Ifans as the famous Russian mystic, leading the Duke of Oxford to quip, “Well, thank God dinner is being served.” From there, the trailer goes gangbusters, with Fiennes’ character explaining the Kingsman’s formation as “the first independent intelligence agency” as various assassinations, warfront battles, explosions, and a uniquely timed beheading flash across ...
