Related Stories Per usual, a bunch of these names elicit the reflexive “They’re not already in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?” reaction. Dolly Parton isn’t down? Dionne Warwick, too? How?! This is the first year Emi...

The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

Phife Dawg’s Estate Details Posthumous Album Forever

On what would be the MC’s 51st birthday today, the estate of A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg detailed the forthcoming posthumous album Forever. It is set to debut on March 22, on the anniversary of Malik Izaak Taylor’s death in 2016. The New York-born rapper and 4x Grammy-nominee had partnered with trusted collaborators on Forever, and his estate alongside Smokin’ Needles Records are ready to release his final word as a solo MC. Forever will include “Nutshell PART 2” (featuring Busta Rhymes and Redman), which debuted earlier this year. Taylor’s mother Cheryl Boyce-Taylor (a.k.a. Mama Phife) said in a statement of the upcoming record: “Forever, soon come. His voice is a steel pan cruising the sea salt edge of Trini waters. A balm, a salve, a son’s kiss on his mama’s ch...

September 24, 1991: A Banner Release Day for Musical Masterworks

I walked into Rhino Records in New Paltz, New York on September 24, 1991, with one mission in mind: copping the new cassette by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After months of reading about the band working on the follow-up to their 1989 breakthrough LP Mother’s Milk with Rick Rubin, the time was finally nigh. Heading into the store after school, the metallic gray Rock and Roll Over-evoking cover art for Blood Sugar Sex Magick was staring right at me from the new releases shelf. I snatched up the cassette, along with Ceremony, the new Cult album, which had come out that day as well. I lumbered over to the counter and was greeted with a side-eye from the store manager as he surveyed my purchase choices.  “So you’re not getting Nevermind?” he asked. “Huh?”  “The new Nirvana album,” he s...

A Tribe Called Quest Deny Involvement In NFT Auction Of Group’s Royalties

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Al Pereira / Getty All the news about A Tribe Called Quest becoming the newest Hip-Hop entity to enter the world of NFT’s is flat-out false, says Ali Shaheed Muhammad in a fiery social media post that reveals another controversy concerning Hip-Hop and cryptocurrency. The DJ and producer was compelled to speak out at length after a Billboard article last week claimed that the iconic Hip-Hop group entered into a partnership with online music royalties marketplace Royalty Exchange to auction off a 1.5% share of the group’s sound recording royalties from their first five albums. This would be sold off as a non-fungible token (NFT). Dubbing the article as “Not Friggin True,” Muhammad decided to detail exactly why this move wasn’t approved by the group. “At the...

Microphone Check 1, 2 What Is This?: Phife Dawg’s Best Verses

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Al Pereira / Getty Five years ago on this date, (March 22nd), the world of Hip-Hop lost one of its most enigmatic and lyrically versatile MC’s when it was announced that Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor) , one-fourth of the legendary A Tribe Called Quest passed away due to complications from diabetes at his home in San Francisco. Proudly representing the borough of Queens, New York, Phife Dawg had a few nicknames that spoke to his flawless capability as an MC, but the “Five Foot Assassin” tag was a calling card and a promise whenever he stepped up to the microphone. Starting out with Q-Tip (Jonathan Davis), Jarobi White and Ali Shaheed Muhammad to form A Tribe Called Quest in high school back in 1985, he helped usher in a new era in Hip-Hop and was one of the arc...
