Will Barack Obama Tie This Presidential Grammy Record?

Barack Obama may be headed for his third Grammy win at the 64th annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 31. Obama’s A Promised Land is nominated for best spoken word album (includes poetry, audio books and storytelling). He previously won in the category twice as a U.S. Senator – with Dreams From My Father (2005) and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream (2007). If he wins again, he’ll tie Jimmy Carter as the U.S. president with the most Grammy Awards. Carter won three Grammys in the spoken word category long after leaving the White House in 1981. He won for Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis (2006), A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety (2015) and Faith – A Journey For All (2018). Trevor Noah Returns to Host the 2022 Grammy Awards

After hosting the most unorthodox show in Grammy Awards history earlier this year, Trevor Noah is back for a victory lap. The Daily Show personality will return to host the 64th Annual Grammy Awards this January, CBS and the Recording Academy announced today. “Trevor brought his trademark talent and versatility to last March’s Grammys, and we can’t wait for him to host the event on CBS and Paramount+ again this year,” CBS President and CEO George Cheeks said in a statement. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. added, “We’re so excited to welcome Trevor back to the Grammys stage and feel fortunate to once again have him hosting what we believe will be an unforgettable evening.” The 2021 Grammys were originally scheduled for January 31st, 2021, but were delayed until March due to...

Who Should Win Best Music Video at the 2022 Grammys? Vote!

The Grammy race for best music video is well worth watching this year. For one thing, there are seven nominees instead of the usual five (owing to ties). And the entries run the gamut from Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s performance of an 87-year-old Cole Porter standard, “I Get a Kick Out of You,” to “Shot in the Dark,” a new song by veteran hard rock band AC/DC. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news Two of the nominees are past winners in this category. In addition to Gaga, who won for “Bad Romance” (2010), Lil Nas X is nominated for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).” The pop star won best music video two years ago for “Old Town Road (Remix),” his megahit collab with Billy Ray Cyrus. Five of the nominated videos were made in support of tracks that are ...

Leon Bridges, Sylvan Esso, Yola, Fleet Foxes and More Artists React to 2022 Grammy Nominations: Exclusive

Nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards were announced on Tuesday (November 23rd). Lead nominee Jon Batiste is up for a whopping 11 Grammys, and Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. aren’t far behind, with eight nominations each. Artists like Leon Bridges — who is up for Best Traditional R&B Performance with Robert Glasper, as well as for Best R&B Album — shared their exclusive reactions with Consequence by email. “It’s humbling to be nominated for two Grammy Awards, amongst all my peers in the music industry,” Bridges says. “Gold Diggers Sound was a labor of love, something healing that followed a difficult time in my life and was born out of nighttime R&B jam sessions with musicians and a producer I deeply respect and am inspired by. Grammy Nominations in the Post-Committee Era: Who Benefited & Who Didn’t? (Analysis)

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga and ABBA might want to thank the Recording Academy for getting rid of its nominations review committees. Wizkid might feel differently. This year, for the first time in 27 years, the final nominations in the Grammys’ Big Four categories were determined by the Academy’s 11,000 voting members without being second-guessed by a review committee. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news For the most part, the nominations are what you might expect. Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license,” Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” and Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” are right in the Grammys’ wheelhouse. They’re well-crafted records that did well with just about every constituency – fans, critics, radio, the industry. They were goi...

Marilyn Manson and DaBaby Receive Album of the Year Grammy Nominations Due to Rule Change

Thanks to a new rule change, Marilyn Manson and DaBaby each have the opportunity to take home their first Grammy next year. They are both nominated for appearing on Kanye West’s latest effort, Donda, which received a nod for Album of the Year. Prior to an amendment announced by The Recording Academy in late May, only contributors credited on at least 33% of the album’s playing time were eligible in the prestigious category. This restriction was lifted with the intent of acknowledging the work of traditionally overlooked collaborators like songwriters, producers, and engineers, who often go unrecognized for their key participation in recording an album. As a byproduct, two of the more toxic figures in music are eligible to pick up a Grammy win next year. West recruited DaBaby and Manson to ...

The Surprises, Snubs, and Changing Rules for This Year’s Grammy Nominations

On Tuesday morning, the Recording Academy revealed the full slate of nominations for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. Over the past few tumultuous years, the Recording Academy has overseen changes in leadership and nominating procedures, with one more twist being announced just this morning before the nominations were unveiled: the Big Four general field categories (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) would grow from 8 to 10 nominees each. This is the second expansion in recent years, with only five nominees in those categories through 2018. The 10 nominees for Album of the Year include on-again-off-again rival superstars Kanye West and Taylor Swift. West, who was nominated for Album of the Year for each of his first three albums, has not been in the...

JAY-Z Surpasses Quincy Jones as Artist with Most Grammy Nominations

JAY-Z has set a new Grammys record, passing pioneering producer and composer Quincy Jones for most nominations in the history of the awards. He earned three nominations for the 2022 ceremony, pushing his total to 83. Previously tied with Jones at 80 nominations, the Brooklyn rapper added to his total thanks to collaborations with DMX (“Bath Salts”) and Kanye West (“Jail”), both of which are up for Best Rap Song. Thanks to the latter guest appearance, Jay earned an additional nod as part of Donda’s Album of the Year nomination. Thus far, he has collected 23 Grammys. Paul McCartney kept pace as the runner-up for most Grammy nominations, picking up a pair of nods in the Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album categories. He was previously tied for second place with Jay-Z’s arguably more famous wif...

Grammys 2022 Nominations: As Usual, The Best New Artist Category Is a Head-Scratching One

The Recording Academy, aka the voting body responsible for the Grammy Awards, has been vocal this past year about the internal work of growth and change. They are trying to put on a new face — one that’s more inclusive, one that is more equitable, and one with more voices in the room. They did away with nomination committees, an antiquated system that filtered final say for nominations. With that in mind, many expected the 2022 Grammy Nominations to look a bit different — or at least a little different from past years. At the end of the day, though, the more some things change, the more they stay the same. The Grammys seem to be one of those things, but their Best New Artist category is especially confusing. Best New Artist is, consistently, a pretty baffling category. Maybe the best way t...

Grammys 2022: AC/DC, Deftones, Chris Cornell, Foo Fighters Lead Rock + Metal Nominees

The nominees for the 2022 Grammy Awards have been unveiled, with AC/DC, Deftones, Foo Fighters, and the late Chris Cornell leading the way in the rock and metal categories. Wolfgang Van Halen, Gojira, Mastodon, Dream Theater, and Rob Zombie also received nods in various categories, rounding out an impressive stable of heavy artists being represented at the 2022 ceremony. Nominees for Best Metal Performance — the Grammys’ only metal-centric category — included Deftones for their track “Genesis,” Dream Theater (“The Alien”), Gojira (“Amazonia”), Mastodon (“Pushing the Tides”), and Rob Zombie (“The Triumph of King Freak [A Crypt of Preservation and Superstition]”). Grammys Nominations 2022: Kanye West Gets Surprise Nom, Jon Batiste Leads With 11

The list of Grammys nominations is here and Jon Baptiste leads all nominees with 11 total nominations. Last year, Beyoncé led all nominees with nine total. Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. have eight nominations while Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo picked up seven apiece. The biggest surprise is that Ye — the artist formerly known as Kanye West — picked up an Album of the Year nomination for Donda. The album, which was recently released as a deluxe edition, controversially features two of the year’s most disgraced musicians, Marilyn Manson and DaBaby. The Best Rock Album nominees will make classic rock fans happy, with AC/DC’s Power Up, Black Pumas’ live album Live From Studio A Red, Chris Cornell’s posthumous No One Sings Like You Anymore, Foo Fighters’ Medicine at Midnight, and...
