Jordan was surprised when Chadwick Boseman was robbed of the 2021 Academy Award for Best Actor, with voters snubbing his powerhouse performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in favor of Anthony Hopkins. But via The Hollywood Reporter, Jordan is confident that his Black Panther co-star’s body of work is more substantial than any award. “But you know, this is how I honestly and truly really feel about it: There’s like, there’s no award that can validate his legacy,” Jordan said on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show. “There’s no win that can take anything away from the lives around the world that...

After all, going into last night’s ceremony, Chadwick Boseman was a heavy favorite to win the award. But by night’s end, Hopkins’ performance in The Father had earned him his second Oscar for Best Actor. In a short acceptance speech posted to Instagram on Monday morning, Hopkins expressed his surprise and gratitude, while also paying tribute to Boseman. “At 83 years of age, I did not expect to get this award, I really didn’t. I’m very grateful to the Academy,” Hopkins remarked. “I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-26T02:33:41+00:00“>April 25, 2021 | 10:33pm ET For the second time, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have won Best Original Score at the Academy Awards. Some 11 years after the Nine Inch Nails members first claimed Oscar gold for their score to The Social Network, Reznor and Ross have done it again, winning Best Original Score at tonight’s Oscars for Soul alongside Late Show band leader Jon Batiste. Reznor and Ross were actually nominated twice this year. In addition to Soul, they received recognition for their work in David Fincher’s Mank. Other nominees in the category included Terence Blanchard (Da 5 Bloods), Emile Mosseri (Minari), and James Newton Howard (News of the ...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-26T03:43:28+00:00“>April 25, 2021 | 11:43pm ET In the biggest upset of the night, Chadwick Boseman was robbed of the Best Actor Oscar at the 2021 Academy Awards in favor of Anthony Hopkins. Entering Sunday’s award’s night, Boseman was the easy frontrunner for the Best Actor category. His role as blues trumpeter Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom had already earned him trophies at the Golden Globes (where he became only the second posthumous acting winner, following Peter Finch), the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, the Black Film Critics Circle, the Black Reel Awards, the NAACP Image Awards, and more. But when the final award of the night wa...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-26T00:59:56+00:00“>April 25, 2021 | 8:59pm ET Chloe Zhao has made Oscar history by becoming the first woman of color to ever to win Best Director. The 39-year-old Zhao, who hails from Beijing, took home the award for her stunning film Nomadland, which follows a woman (played by Frances McDormand) as she embarks on a new life as a van-dwelling nomad, traveling the American West. Zhao’s Oscar nomination alone was historic, as she was the first woman of color ever up for Best Director. In winning the award, she enters the history books alongside Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) as the only two women to win in the category. Zhao was a heavy favorite entering the night, as she had pr...

Glenn Close has joined the select club of actors nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie Award for the same role. Via The Hollywood Reporter, she owes this achievement to her performance as Bonnie “Mamaw” Vance in the new film Hillbilly Elegy. The Academy Award shortlist was announced earlier this morning, while the Razzies unveiled their lowlights last week. On the plus side, Close will be competing for her first Oscar against Olivia Colman (The Father), Amanda Seyfried (Mank), Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari), and Maria Bakalova in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. It is Close’s seventh Oscar nomination, following Best Supporting Actress nods for The World According to Garp (1983), The Big Chill (1984), and The Natural (1985), and Best Actress nominations in Fatal Attraction (1988),...
Maria Bakalova, who stole scenes from Sacha Baron Cohen and exposed Rudy Giuliani in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 Academy Awards. Bakalova’s satirical performance as Tutar Sagdiyev befuddled real-life shop workers, healthcare professionals, and the lovable babysitter Janise Jones. But even among people who never saw the movie, she’s known for enduring several minutes alone in a hotel room with Former President Trump’s personal lawyer. Giuliani was filmed telling Bakalova to “come here,” lying down on the bed, and reaching into his pants, before Cohen’s Borat character burst into the room. Giuliani later claimed he was only attempting to tuck in his shirt. The clip dominated the news cycle for several days, even as the c...
Two of the best film performances of 2020 were Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal and Steven Yeun in Minari, and both actors were rightfully nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards because of such. However, in addition to the general excitement of Ahmed and Yeun getting those well-deserved nods, this also means they just made history as the first Muslim actor and first Asian American actor, respectively, to be nominated in the category. In Sound of Metal, Ahmed plays a heavy metal drummer named Ruben who’s learning to live with the loss of hearing, particularly in regards to his career as a musician and his love life — a performance that required him to study with an ASL coach for nearly a year. It’s an intimate and deeply moving character study, especially compared to the bi...
Not even the Oscars are immune from the ensuing pandemic. According to Variety, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may postpone the 93rd Academy Awards, set to go down on February 28th of next year. “It’s likely they’ll be postponed,” a source told the publication, while also contending that any definitive plans are far from concrete. Not surprisingly, the Academy declined to comment. Back in April, they announced that films released digitally can qualify to compete, a drastic amendment from their prior requirement of films having a seven-day theatrical release in Los Angeles County. However, with the entire industry still in flux — from production to distribution — it’s still unclear what films will even be released before year’s end. That uncertainty no doubt weighs heavily ...
