SZA has released a new song off of the soundtrack for the upcoming movie Dear Evan Hansen called “The Anonymous Ones,” an exploration of hiding one’s emotions and the desire to let the truth come to the surface.
“Keep on keeping secrets that they think they have to hide,” she sings. “What if everybody’s secret is they have that secret side?”
The heartfelt single is one of several that will be released off of the soundtrack in the weeks leading up to the film’s debut on September 24. An adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, Dear Evan Hansen follows a high school student struggling with anxiety, feeling as if he is invisible to his fellow classmates. Within the storyline, SZA’s song is sung by Amandla Stenberg, who plays Alana Beck.
While most of the movie’s soundtrack comes from the musical, SZA’s “The Anonymous Ones” is a new addition. Finneas is another artist with an original song called “A Little Closer,” which has yet to be released. Other artists on score include Carrie Underwood and Dan + Shay, who collaborated on a cover of a track that was carried over from the musical.
Last month, SZA debuted three new songs on her SoundCloud in a surprise release, entitled “Nightbird,” “I Hate You” and “Joni.”
In other music news, Drake’s Certified Lover Boy sold over 500,000 units in under one week.
