Succession creator Jesse Armstrong has revealed the correct answer to whether Kendall Roy’s name was crossed out or underlined during a pivotal scene in the show’s fourth season. Spoilers ahead for those who have yet to finish the series.
Armstrong confirmed the answer during a recent appearance at a Financial Times event in London, referring back to season four’s fourth episode which saw the Roy family and the other heads of their company, Waystar Royco, come across a version of Logan Roy’s last will and testament that had Kendall’s name as Logan’s successor. The name, however, also had a line drawn from the bottom up to the middle, confusing many as to whether Kendall’s name was underlined or crossed out.
The showrunner shared that Kendall’s name was, in fact, underlined, meaning that Logan wanted his second eldest son to succeed him as the CEO of Waystar Royco. “If you were crossing something out, you wouldn’t start underneath, would you?” Armstrong told the audience, with journalist Cassam Looch reporting that Armstrong was the one who drew the line on paper.
Unfortunately, those who watched the series finale know that no one from the Roy bloodline became CEO. That position ended up going to Tom Wambsgans, the estranged husband of Logan’s only daughter, Shiv Roy.
