Studio VATRAA Installed A Plastic Stonehenge in Milan

Milan is roughly 4,343 miles away from Stonehenge, but there is a new art installation that brings the prehistoric monolith to the bustling streets of Milan. Well, sort of.

Created by London architecture studio VATRAA, the Plastic Monument is a reinterpretation of England’s ancient trilithons. As the winning entry to National Geographic’s 2019 competition, “Planet or Plastic?”, the studio created the installation by encasing 16,000 plastic bottles in a wire frame to implore viewers to reflect on the impact of plastic pollution.

“We could argue that plastic waste is our legacy to many generations to come,” said the studio in a statement, adding that “the monument draws the attention to the consequences of our actions in the long run, to the fact that what we are doing today might stay on Earth forever.”

The Plastic Monument will be on view in Milan for the next 12 months. VATRAA hopes that the artwork will embark on a global tour thereafter to spread awareness to the perils of plastic.

On the topic of installations, Ian Strange illuminates a Cincinnati neighborhood through PENUMBRA.
