Who are Night Tales and what do you stand for?
We’re a UK/Australian Alt Electronic duo. We stand for bridging the gap between urban culture & electronic music.
Tell us about your sound – where does your style originate from and what have been your biggest visual, social, and sonic influences?
Our sound & song style infuses a singer-songwriter approach that’s embedded in an electronic format.
Was there a definitive turning point to your success? When did you realize the magnitude of your impact within the industry/community?
Great question. When the pandemic hit, we consciously decided to release a song a month – making sure we released something positive & consistent in the world at such a chaotic & unsure time. This volume of art really helped keep our existing fans engaged whilst driving new fans to our music. Little did we know, our campaign of a song a month alerted record labels, A&R, prospective managers, etc. This ultimately lead us to finding our manager Harrison Bamel, which within 12 months snowballed into us securing two album deal with Ultra Music, securing a full time management team with Prime Artists, along with securing our global booking agency, CAA. All this momentum paved the way for us to relocate to L.A. to really maximize our potential, grasp those collaborative studio opportunities, release new music & tour!
Where did the name Night Tales come from?
The Night Tales name was birthed from our respective previous solo projects, which were urban & pop. Collaboratively, we wanted to make more dance focused music but still keep the soul & depth from those projects. So Night Tales became song stories about what happens in the deep of the Night and what bleeds through in the days & weeks after those encounters.
What made the fit right for this duo?
Both of us are very deep, sensitive & emotional souls. We’re both able to bounce off another’s emotional vulnerability to create something beautiful & poetic. We also have a great balance of production & songwriting, which enables us to really co-create effortlessly.
What is Night Tales process of creating a song?
Our process is always a feeling, whether that be from a chord progression, a sample or lyrics – when one of those elements sparks an emotive feeling, then we run with that. We explore that feeling, dive deeper into the meaning of that reaction then build a story around that raw emotion.
What was the inspiration behind the song “Thinking About You”?
2021 we embarked on our 1st US tour. What was meant to be 2 weeks turned into 3 months of being stranded in the US, across NY, LA & Nashville. We spent the majority in Nashville in a derelict Airbnb, sleeping on the floor with no furniture, internet etc. In that moment we wrote Thinking About You. It was an ode to our family & friends who we dearly missed and hope that one day we will be reunited with them.
In what ways have you pushed yourself beyond existing self-imposed limitations?
We think the biggest thing we’ve done is relocate of Sydney to L.A. to really get out out of our comfort zone and immerse ourselves into the music scene & mindset. Since we’ve arrived its been work, work , tour, work – which we are extremely grateful and are relishing in. Also, we are really starting to believe in ourselves & our music. We feel that we offer something really captivating & soulful in story telling & music delivery.
What’s next for Night Tales?
2022 is an exciting year for us. Our debut album ‘Proof’ comes out at the end of the year, on the back of 5 singles pre-album drop. We play Electric Forest Festival in June & embark our debut album tour in Nov across the US
What do you wish for the future of electronic music? In what ways would you like to see it evolve?
For us, we really want to bridge the gap between urban music & culture into electronic music. We are one of very few artists of color that produce, perform live, sing in our genre, but still bringing that ‘swag & soul’. We really want to pioneer & shed more light into this genre and have that cross over appeal. In the future, you might see us collaborate with Afrobeat artist, Rap & Rnb artists. The future is exciting for us
