Dubai-based arts platform Sole joins Power Horse to explore South Africa’s underground skate scene. Documented through a range of film images and a short film, the Green Shoot feature encapsulates a community of fervent skaters who are boosting the scene to a global scale.
South Africa’s rising skate scene is defined by a make-do culture where skaters hit the country’s unusual mix of skate locations for a chance to flip their boards. While some spots appear almost dilapidated, others like the disused Civic Centre have grown to become an alternative playground for skating.
In the video, a group of South Africa’s most prolific skaters including Ethan Cairns and Alex Williams, can be seen hitting Table Mountain’s winding roads to the city’s unique skate spots. Though the community is small and spaces are limited, it’s evident that these skaters are bound together by their mutual love for the sport. Take a closer look at the skate snapshots in the gallery above.
