Sofi Tukker’s ‘Summer in New York’ Hits Dance/Mix Show Airplay Top 10: ‘We Were Dreaming About the Energy of the City’

Sofi Tukker’s ‘Summer in New York’ Hits Dance/Mix Show Airplay Top 10: ‘We Were Dreaming About the Energy of the City’

Sofi Tukker sizzles on Billboard‘s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart (dated July 23) with “Summer in New York,” which soars from No. 22 to No. 9. The song is scoring core-dance airplay on iHeartRadio’s Evolution Network, Channel Q and WZFL (Revolution 93.5) Miami, among others, according to Luminate.

(The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on around 70 top 40-formatted reporters.)

“We wrote this song while we were in Florida in the middle of quarantine,” Sofi Tukker – the duo of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern – tells Billboard in a statement. “We were dreaming about the energy of the city in the summer, of being with friends, of serendipity and adventure. The fact that now that is happening in real life still blows our mind. Seeing this song catching on and rising up the charts in the past few weeks has us allllll hyped up!”

“Summer” is Sofi Tukker’s fourth top 10 on the chart among seven entries, after “Best Friend,” featuring NERVO, The Knocks and Alisa Ueno (No. 1 for two weeks, 2018); “House Arrest,” with Gorgon City (No. 2, 2020); and “Sun Came Up,” with John Summit (No. 2, 2021).

“Summer” benefits from a familiar interpolation of DNA’s “Tom’s Diner,” featuring Suzanne Vega, a No. 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and a No. 7-peaking single on Alternative Airplay in 1990. “Diner,” originally recorded by Vega a cappella on her 1987 album Solitude Standing, resurged this spring on the LyricFind Global list (No. 1, April), aided by AnnenMayKantereit and Giant Rooks’ version, which hit No. 8 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (also in April).

Plus, Tyga and Doja Cat’s “Freaky Deaky,” a Rhythmic Airplay chart topper in May, credits Vega as writer, given the song’s similarities to “Diner.” The composition about the real-life Tom’s Restaurant in New York (as famously seen during the run of Seinfeld), has also been reimagined by Fall Out Boy and Britney Spears, among others.

“Summer” is from Sofi Tukker’s Wet Tennis, which debuted at its No. 12 high on Top Dance/Electronic Albums in May.

On the multi-metric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, Kygo cruises in with “Lost Without You,” with Dean Lewis (No. 14). It’s Kygo’s 58th chart hit, the second-most of all acts dating to the chart’s January 2013 inception; David Guetta leads, with 67.

Also Lewis’ third appearance, the track follows the pair’s “Never Really Loved Me,” which bowed at its No. 17 best a week earlier. “Lost” begins with 2.1 million U.S. streams and nearly 1,000 downloads sold in the July 8-14 tracking week. Concurrently, the song starts at No. 7 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales.

Additionally, Dillon Francis, ILLENIUM and EVAN GIIA enter Hot Dance/Electronic Songs at No. 15 with “Don’t Let Me Let Go.” ILLENIUM’s 42nd appearance, Francis’ 28th and GIIA’s second, the song opens with 1.5 million streams and 500 sold, also good for a No. 18 arrival on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales.
