Snoop Dogg laughs at Drake’s UMG legal actions: “On the West, we hold court in the streets”

Snoop Dogg laughs at Drake’s UMG legal actions: “On the West, we hold court in the streets”

When Drake announced his legal actions against Universal Music Group last month — claiming that they should have blocked the release of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track masterpiece “Not Like Us,” but instead engaged in a scheme to boost its popularity — many saw the move as simply Drizzy extending his L, including none other than Snoop Dogg, it seems.

In a new interview that aired on The Bootleg Kev Podcast today, Snoop (who’s promoting his new album, Missionary) was asked what he thought of the legal actions, prompting the West Coast legend to break out laughing. Smirking, he tried to avoid answering at first, saying “Next question.”

But after another moment, Snoop caved and made one comment. “On the West, we hold court in the streets,” he said. “That’s just what we call it.”

Drake filed a pair of legal actions late last month alleging that UMG participated in a scheme that used bots and “covert payments” to artificially inflate the success of “Not Like Us,” and that he was defamed by the label’s failure to prevent the song from being released. Since then, UMG has rejected the allegations as “offensive and untrue,” and described Drake’s legal arguments as “contrived and absurd.”

Meanwhile, Snoop also spoke about his brief personal involvement in Drake and Lamar’s feud, inclduing the lyrics from Lamar’s GNX opening track, “Wacced Out Murals,” which express disappointment about a time when Snoop reposted a clip featuring Drake’s “Taylor Made Freestyle.”

“[Lamar is] a rapper, he’s supposed to speak his mind and tell his truth,” Snoop said. “I’m his big homeboy, so I have to take what’s said from his perspective because he’s speaking truth. I’m willing to accept truth when it’s brought to me directly.”

Continuing, Snoop alleged that he had no idea “Taylor Made Freestyle” was the audio for the clip he posted, and that he was surprised when he heard that Lamar was upset with him.

“I did a collaborative post with someone,” Snoop claimed. “When I do [a collaborative post], I don’t listen to the music, I just see ‘Gin and Juice,’ cause it’s my brand. So, when I post it, I’m thinking I posted ‘Gin and Juice,’ I don’t know what song it is, I’m not hip to everybody’s music. Then I get the word, ‘Nephew didn’t like what you did.’” After that, Snoop deleted the post and left Lamar a voicemail. “Nephew, it’s Uncle Snoop, I got your message and I apologize,” he said. “I was fucked up. My bad.”

When asked how he felt about Drake using his voice to generate an AI rap without his permission, Snoop said that because he’s “such a big figure,” he doesn’t have “too many parameters” when it comes to that sort of thing. He did, however, lay down the line in regards to being dragged into beef like the Kendrick-Drake feud.

“When it comes to beef, that’s a real parameter that I do have,” he explained. “If it’s out of my reach, I step out and allow two men to get an understanding… They don’t need me to take sides or jump in.” For more, watch the full interview with Snoop and Bootleg Kev below.

In other Snoop news, Missionary finally debuted last week, featuring production by Dr. Dre and guest appearances by Sting, Eminem, 50 Cent, Jelly Roll, the late Tom Petty and more. Up next, the Doggfather will have a one-off performance in Lincoln, California on December 27th. Get tickets here.
