Smart Unveils Its “#1” Compact Electric SUV

Daimler‘s Smart has unveiled its all-new model #1  SUV, a compact full-electric vehicle that builds upon the niche urban practicality of its predecessors to provide a more all-rounded experience with a larger profile, added performance, and new tech upgrades.

Departing from the ultra-compact cars the company is typically known for, Smart #1 arrives with much more interior space accompanied by a revamped futuristic design language. Exteriors display smooth liquid lines, frameless doors, retractable door handles, and a “floating halo” panoramic glass roof. Stepping inside, the cabin is equipped with a 12.8-inch infotainment screen, Beats sound system, 10-inch heads-up display, 3D interface controllable through voice commands, and a digital key option to share access with friends and family.

For performance, the #1 is powered by a 268 HP electric motor and fast-charging capabilities that take the 66kWh battery from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes with a 150-kW DC charger. The electric SUV further reports a respectable 273 miles of maximum range based on the WLTP cycle, and a top speed of 112MPH.

Smart is expected to debut first in China later this year with plans to enter the European market. The company currently has yet to declare plans for a release in North America. Stay tuned for pricing and release dates to be announced in the coming months.

Elsewhere in automotive news, DeLorean will unveil its brand new electric vehicle concept car in August.
