Sly Stone documentary Sly Lives!, directed by Questlove, to premiere on Hulu

Questlove’s original documentary about funk pioneer Sly Stone will premiere on Hulu beginning February 13th, 2025, following its debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Titled Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), the film will feature a star-studded guest list including André 3000, D’Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, Nile Rogers, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, George Clinton, Ruth Copeland, and Clive Davis.

Bandmates from Sly and the Family Stone and family members Sylvette Phunne Robinson, Novena Carmel, and Sylvester Stewart Jr. are also set to appear. Watch a brief teaser trailer below.

Questlove and Sly Stone previously worked together on the singer’s memoir. The drummer penned the foreword for Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), which in October 2023 became the first book published on Questlove’s AUWA Books imprint.

Sly Lives! is Questlove’s latest documentary following his 2021 Oscar-winning debut, Summer of Soul (Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). He’s next set to helm Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, a new film about Saturday Night Live’s musical legacy, which will premiere on January 27th on NBC.
