Sleepy Hallow dropped off his latest long-form release a few weeks back. Entitled Boy Meets World, the star-studded album sees the Brooklyn rapper looking more inward than ever before. On “A N X I E T Y” with Doechii, the rapper taps into his relatable lyricism to open up about his mental health, and ultimately convey the universality of these feelings.
“A N X I E T Y” samples an unsuspecting melody… Gotye and Kimbra’s timeless hit from 2011, “Somebody That I Used to Know.” While many rappers revitalize old rap and R&B samples, per a press release, Sleepy admittedly prefers songs that he “finds at random.”
The video, directed by Nimi Hendrix, spotlights Sleepy in the studio, leaning into infrared visual effects and trippy cinematographic tactics. Doechii dominates the hook, (“Anxiety / Keep on tryin’ me / Feel it quietly / Tryna silence me…”), setting the tone for Sleepy to spit his introspective bars. “Look, sh*t got me trippin’ / Fightin’ with my demons and my demons is winnin’ / I feel like, don’t nobody ever feel how I feel / And I ain’t never sober, baby girl, I get high still,” he opens.
