“I’m not perfect / One step up and then two steps back / Might slip up but I’m still on track,” SiR delivers on HEAVY‘s eighth cut, “I’M NOT PERFECT” with Ab-Soul. This is the exact sentiment the enigmatic Top Dawg Entertainment artist strings throughout all of the project’s 16 tracks; arriving as SiR’s fourth studio album, HEAVY marks his most honest and introspective offering to date.
HEAVY finds the Inglewood artist reflecting on his mental health and sobriety journey in a refreshing, authentic manner, unafraid to tap into these raw feelings and fears many artists only scratch the surface of.
“I think 2020 was the worst year of my life,” SiR explains of the album’s origins in a press release. “I went through addiction issues, went through a relationship problem. Me and my wife were about to get a divorce, and we had a baby… It was the most pressure I had ever felt in my life.”
“My life was in shambles, and the music was coming out phenomenal,” he continued. “I was surprised. But then, once I got to the other side [of my problems], it started to get even better. That’s where the album’s coming from. It’s coming from a place where you’re going to see both sides.”
Led by a handful of singles – including “KARMA” with Isaiah Rashad, the 50-minute LP also sees contributions from Ty Dolla $ign on “IGNORANT,” Scribz Riley on “LIFE IS GOOD” and Anderson .Paak on “POETRY IN MOTION” – a track that focuses in on the light.
“If I slip, I slide, I don’t trip, I glide / When I dip, I dive, when I dive, I dive deep / In the middle of her ocean, you know where to find me / When it’s poetry in motion, she don’t ever mind me,” he asserts on the chorus of “POETRY IN MOTION.”
In tandem with the album’s release, SiR also dropped off the cinematic visual for “YOU.” Check it out below.
The TDE artist also curated a capsule of merchandise – complete with a vinyl, CD and hoodie – to commemorate HEAVY’s release.
