The Super Mario Bros. Movie has dropped a surprise teaser trailer for fans, building upon the battle scene in the first official trailer. As Mario faces off against Donkey Kong in a jam-packed stadium, he’s seen jumping up and activating a yellow mystery box, transforming into Cat Mario.
Having briefly appeared as the racoon dog-like Tanooki Mario in previous scenes, Mario’s newest transformation continues the movie’s references to other titles in the franchise, alluding this time to the Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart games in which Cat Mario appears. “You got the cat box! I’m sorry,” says Seth Rogen‘s Donkey Kong. “Now you die.” Rogen’s voice debut for Donkey Kong allows fans to finally hear the film’s entire main cast which includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Charlie Day as Luigi.
Produced by Nintendo in collaboration with Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Mario franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the upcoming film is an origin story of sorts, following Mario, Toad, Princess Peach, and others as they attempt to stop Bowser from his plans of world domination.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to hit theaters on April 7. Take a look at the teaser trailer above.
