SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film Presents ‘Face Value’ Sneaker Masks Exhibition by Freehand Profit

Artist Gary Lockwood, also known as Freehand Profit, has officially announced his debut museum exhibition titled Face Value at the Savannah College of Art and Design. The showcase features over 30 of the artist’s intricate sneaker mask pieces that are all pieced together from highly-revered kicks.

When constructing these fantastical, 3D pieces, Lockwood preserved the markings and style of the original shoes, all of which are comprised of silhouettes such as adidas YEEZYS, Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 collaborations, Air Maxes, Doernbecher x Air Jordan team-ups, Nike SB Dunks and ASICS. “With the cost and value of these sneakers, it’s important to keep in mind that is that the sacrifice is important to the work,” he tells HYPEBEAST. “Sacrificing something that is mass produced, no matter how coveted it is, still pales in comparison to something that is handmade, original, and one of a kind.”

The exhibition is the biggest for the LA-based artist to-date. “I’ve never had this many masks under one roof. And while many folks have seen my work, most of them have seen the photography, so to be able to have this many pieces in one place and to see so many milestones from my work is really important – from the old work to the new”, he says. “It’s exciting to see the scale of the body of work rather than just the individual masks. I grew up a museum nerd, so to finally have my first museum show is a real honor and SCAD FASH and the entire university has really treated me right.”

It’s also a timely moment for SCAD as the opening of this collection aligns with the announcement of SCAD’s new sneaker design minor, which is driven by student interest and alumni success in the industry.

Peep a closer look into at some of the pieces in the gallery above and note that it is now on display SCAD FASH through September 11, 2022.

For other news, WOAW Gallery recently unveiled its “REFLECTIONS: PARTLY FICTION” exhibition.
