SAN ANTONIO- Tomorrow is Father’s Day and June is men’s health awareness month. One local dad is taking the extra step to make sure every father has a support system.
In 2008, Gregory Berlanga, a single father, saw the need for a space for dads to find activities to do with their kids. With that in mind, he decided to create awesome dads of San Antonio.
“Things were kinda tough financially, so I was trying to find things for dads to do that didn’t cost money like outdoor movie nights, some of the museums in town some guys don’t know that there’s free museum days for families to go and visit.”
First having single dads in mind, Berlanga decided to expand who his website caters to. Now divorced dads, stay at home dads and grandparents with primary custody are welcome.
“We talk to guys about what they can do as far a cleaning tips something they can do at home cooking ideas, stuff like that that’s why we expanded.”
Berlanga also focuses on healthy eating. Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 years ago, he lost over 185 pounds and decided to combine that into the website.
“So, one of things we started integrating was teaching guys to cook a little bit healthier so that they can have a little more quality to spend with their kids as they get older.”
Although Father’s Day is only one day out of the year, Berlanga wants to make sure that all dads across San Antonio are reminded that they are important all year round.
“We do a lot of things for our families, sometimes they don’t some of the trials and tribulations we go through internally that we have to deal with and so sometimes maybe just kind of understand some of the things that we go through to be able to provide for our families.”
Berlanga will soon be starting a new segment on his website that will guide dads on cooking healthier. He will also have a motivational series for dads about overcoming obstacles and substance abuse.
