Saint Laurent Enlists Six Photographers for SELF 07 Art Series

Saint Laurent has unveiled the latest iteration of its SELF art series, which celebrates the house’s personality through photographers, artists and filmmakers. For SELF 07, Saint Laurent’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello joined forces with six Magnum Photos photographers to showcase the power of self-expression.

SELF 07 sees the works of photographers Alex Webb of New York, Olivia Arthur of London, Harry Gruyaert of Paris, Takashi Homma of Tokyo, Daesung Lee of Seoul and Birdhead of Shanghai. Published photographer Alex Webb focuses on street photography and decided to capture Los Angeles’ Pinata District, Flower District and Fashion District for the series. For Olivia Arthur of London, her work revolves around the human relationship with bodies and identity. For SELF 07, the photographer explores the totality of the physical world and its intersection with interaction. Known for his work on color, Harry Gruyaert utilizes his fascination with airports to create a reflection on signage, light and the interplay that exists in this setting.

Growing up in a rural village, Daesung Lee has always been inspired by the beauty of nature. For SELF 07, Lee exhibits the deeper connection with nature and its accompanying power of personal reflection that arose during the pandemic. Resting between the bustling cosmopolitan and fashion-forward atmosphere that is Tokyo, Takashi Homma utilizes the camera obscura technique to showcase this reality for the series. Lastly, analog-focused photographers Song Tao and Ji Weiyu of Birdhead convey the harmonious relationships of species in nature. In line with this vision, their contribution to SELF incorporates negative photo prints for the first time to illustrate the dance of freedom.

The artistic work included of SELF 07 by the six photographers will be on display from June 9-12 in New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai. Check out the latest iteration above and online at Saint Laurent.
