The four-part docuseries, titled The Kalawa Jazmee Story, is scheduled to air on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) and coincides with the label’s 29th anniversary.
It promises to take viewers on an immersive journey of the South African music industry and challenge viewers’ understanding of the local music business. Drawing from the label’s extensive archives, the documentary will unveil rare footage, unheard stories and intimate interviews with the artists and visionaries who shaped its history.
Speaking to Sowetan Live, Oskido said: “It fills us with immense pride that we have been part of popular culture, producing stars and bringing joy to people’s lives. We have also shown that it is possible to build something significant in this industry.”
Kalawa Jazmee has been a key player in the South African music scene. Guided by Oskido, Christos, Don Laka, Eugene Mthethwa, among others, the label has provided a nurturing home for generations of prolific artists and legendary groups like Mafikizolo, Busiswa, Professor, Uhuru, Zonke, DJ Zinhle, B.O.P, Bongo Muffin, Black Motion, Trompies, Boom Shaka, Big Nuz and Vigro Deep.
The label has also been instrumental in popularising kwaito music, a genre that is synonymous with the country’s vibrant cultural landscape.
“It’s been an incredible journey. Like any family we had differences, difficulties, but also many wins. We started this label off the street, and we have built a formidable catalogue as well as knowledge of the business. We have learnt a lot, because the music business is quite complex,” Oskido told Sowetan Live.
