Ryan Coogler Shares His Final Conversation With Chadwick Boseman

Two years after the shocking death of Chadwick Boseman from a battle with colon cancer, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has now shared his final conversation with the late actor. Coogler discussed his last interaction with Boseman in the latest episode of Wakanda Forever: The Official Black Panther Podcast.

“My last conversation with him was calling to ask if he wanted to read [the script] before I got notes from the studio,” said Ryan Coogler. “That was the last time we spoke. He passed maybe a couple weeks after I finished.” “I could tell he was laying down when we were talking,” noting how tired Boseman sounded with his wife Simone Ledward Boseman beside him. “He kicked Simone out because he told her he didn’t want her to hear nothing that could get him in trouble with his NDA.”

Chadwick Boseman refused to read the script for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, saying that he did not want to get in the way of Marvel Studios‘ notes. But Coogler shared, “I found out later that he was too tired to read anything.” The rest of the conversation Boseman talked about planning for his wedding and asking Coogler about his child that was recently born.

Ryan Coogler then outlined his shock when he learned about the Black Panther star’s death, “I was at my house. I got a call from my manager Charles King. He called and told me, and I didn’t want to believe it, so I called Denzel [Washington], and I spoke to him and we thought it might be a rumor, so I texted Chad, I was in denial.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens in theaters November 11.

For more entertainment news, director Danny Boyle reveals the script for 28 Weeks Later is now complete.
