Robert Pattinson Claims He Made Ambient Electronic Music in The Batsuit

Robert Pattinson has revealed to GQ that he channeled his inner Brian Eno while on the set of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, making ambient electronic music in the Batsuit in between takes.

With the movie primarily shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pattinson described the set as a “bubble within a bubble” and “insular.” Stuck in the suit and not allowed outside of the studio, the British actor added he “felt very much alone” while always shooting in the dark of night. “You’re not really allowed out of the studio with the suit on, so I barely knew what was going on at all outside,” he explained.

The Batman star was built a tent where he could go to decompress and passed the time as best he could. “I’d be in the tent just making ambient electronic music in the suit, looking over the cowl,” Pattinson recalled. “There’s something about the construction of the cowl that makes it very difficult to read books, so you have to kind of almost lean forward to see out of the cowl.”

It’s worth noting Pattinson isn’t a musical neophyte. He once joked that music was his “backup plan if acting fails” after contributing vocals to two songs on the Twilight soundtrack and also played guitar on Death Grips’ 2013 song, “Birds.” More recently, Pattinson linked up with the Nottingham band tindersticks for “Willow” from the soundtrack to his 2018 film, High Life.

According to GQ correspondent Daniel Riley, however, Pattinson also admitted that “sometimes he’ll just make something up in an interview, in order to say anything at all — and that it has at times come back to bite him (for instance, comments he made years ago about not washing his hair that have followed him to this day).”

With that in mind, Pattinson’s claims do have to be taken with a grain of salt, but given his musical history, we’d be inclined to believe him here. It only feels appropriate after Reeves revealed Pattinson’s version of Batman was inspired by Kurt Cobain.

Pattinson will swoop into theaters alongside Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Colin Farrell (Penguin), Andy Serkis (Alfred), and Jeffrey Wright (Commissioner Gordon) on March 4th. One of Pattinson’s next projects is an untitled sci-fi film with Bong Joon Ho.
