RM Sotheby's Lists a Stunning 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster For Sale

In the realm of classic automobiles, few vehicles evoke as much admiration and desire as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster. A stunning example of the classic, which has undergone a 3,500-hour restoration by Hilton & Moss, has recently been listed by RM Sotheby’s via its private sale page with an asking price of $1,273,565 USD.

The 300 SL Roadster, originally released in 1957, is a marvel of its time, featuring advanced technology that remains relevant even today. Unlike other classics that have been modified with modern tech to match current performance standards, the 300 SL stands out for requiring no such improvements.

This particular 300 SL Roadster changed hands among various collectors in Europe, eventually ending up with its current owner in the UK. It was first registered in July 1957 and initially supplied to the United States. After several years in the U.S., it returned to Germany in 1990 and underwent a significant restoration in 1993, before making its way to the UK.

In the UK, the car was entrusted to Hilton & Moss, a renowned restoration firm. They discovered that while the 1993 restoration was commendable, there were areas needing attention, particularly some improperly repaired damage. As a result, the car underwent an extensive restoration, clocking in the previously mentioned 3,500 hours of labor. The restorers chose an Anthracite Grey finish over a Red leather interior, an attractive and rare color scheme for this model.

Performance-wise, the car is fitted with a replacement engine and gearbox of the correct type from 1959. Post-restoration, the Roadster was showcased at Salon Prive in 2017, earning second-in-class honors. RM Sotheby’s notes that the condition of the vehicle is “truly excellent” and that it “performs impeccably” — largely thanks to meticulous maintenance and a recent service by Martin Cushway Engineering, a renowned 300 SL specialist in the UK.

On the road, the 300 SL Roadster offers linear acceleration, smooth gear changes and a well-tuned engine. Its timeless design and advanced engineering make it a favorite for collectors and enthusiasts alike, popular for both distance touring or simply enjoying the pleasure of a classic drive.

At the time of writing, interested collectors can visit the lot to either place an offer or inquire for more information, via RM Sotheby’s official site.
