Rivian has just announced that the Ocean Coast trim for both its R1T and R1S models are now being delayed. In an email obtained by Electrek, the electric car maker wrote that “the light wood in Ocean Coast is more challenging to produce,” and that so it is currently focusing on just producing vehicles with the Black Mountain and Forest Edge interior trims. “Building in few build combinations reduces complexity with our suppliers and in the plant and allows us to build a greater number of vehicles,” the company continued. “This updated approach also means we’ll see Adventure Package vehicles rolling off the line alongside Launch Edition vehicles over the next few months.” Those who ordered a vehicle with the Ocean Coast trim will now have to wait until at least fall for their cars to be delivered.
Coinciding with the announcement of the delay was a preview of a new “Sand Mode” that Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe showed off over on Twitter, where a clip shows the R1S handling some pretty sandy terrain. While there’s not much more information at the moment regarding how exactly the mode affects or changes the car’s performance, Scaringe did confirm that it’ll be a feature that you can obtain in the form of an OTA update without Rivian owners having to physically install anything themselves.
