Ahead of the premiere of the Savage x Fenty Show Vol. 3, Rihanna on Wednesday gave fans a small hint at what to expect from the long-awaited follow-up to her 2016 album Anti.
During an interview with the Associated Press on the red carpet for the upcoming Amazon Prime-backed fashion video, the creative polymath confirmed that her forthcoming music release, commonly referred to as R9, will be “completely different” than what people might expect.
“You’re not going to expect what you hear,” she said. “Just put that in your mind. Whatever you know of Rihanna is not gonna be what you hear. I’m really experimenting and music is, like, it’s like fashion. You should be able to play. I should be able to wear whatever I want and I treat music the same way. So, I’m having fun and it’s going to be completely different. That’s it.”
Rihanna did not disclose a release date for the project.
For the Savage x Fenty Show Vol. 3, which is scheduled to premiere on September 24, Rih has employed a star-studded lineup of performers, including Nas, Daddy Yankee, BIA, Jazmine Sullivan, Ricky Martin, Normani, and Jade Novah. Similar to past iterations, the multi-hyphenate confirmed that the latest collection will champion inclusivity, specifically citing a move toward body diversity for men.
“I think men have been left behind in the inclusion curve that’s been happening recently,” she said.
Elsewhere, watch Lil Nas X return to his country roots with a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
