Rema and Davido emerged as the top winners at the 2023 Trace Awards in Kigali, Rwanda, held on October 21. These awards, introduced by the global TV and multimedia platform Trace, aim to honor African and Afro-influenced musicians both in Africa and across the African diasporas.
Rema clinched two awards, one for the “Song of the Year” with his worldwide hit “Calm Down,” and the other as the “Best Global African Artist,” sharing the latter with Nomcebo. His remix of “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Davido also secured two awards, one for “Best Male Artist” and the other for “Best Collaboration” for his work on “Unavailable” alongside Musa Keys.
Burna Boy’s “Love Damini” won the prestigious “Album of the Year” award.
The Trace Awards featured electrifying performances by approximately 50 artists with African and Afro-inspired influences from around the globe, including Davido, Yemi Alade, Mr Eazi, and Diamond Platnumz.
Beyond the competitive categories, the awards also honored three distinguished individuals: a “Lifetime Achievement Award” was presented to 2Face, the “Change Maker Award” recognized Mr Eazi from Nigeria, and the “Best Global African Artist” title was jointly awarded to Rema and Nomcebo, with no prior nominees announced
