Refik Anadol Introduces World’s First Open-Source Generative AI-Model Dedicated to Nature

In anticipation of his upcoming museum, DATALAND, Turkish new media artist Refik Anadol will unveil the world’s first open-source generative AI-model dedicated to nature. Entitled Large Nature Model, the initiative will feature AI learning model’s that source its data solely on “nature’s inherent intelligence,” according to a release, as opposed to human intellect that most current models rely on.

The installation will inaugurate at the 54th annual World Economic Forum (WEF), which will be held next week, from January 15 to 19, in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. At the core of the project is an aim to realign society’s perception and engagement with the natural world. Anadol programmed Large Nature Model to use information available from a number of revered institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution and London’s Natural History Museum, amongst others.

The artist explained further:

“Our vision for the Large Nature Model goes beyond being a repository or a creative research initiative. It is a tool for insight, education, and advocacy for the shared environment of humanity. Blending art, technology, and nature, our model aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire innovative solutions by finding connections among isolated archives. Moreover, by engaging people on multiple sensory levels, the outputs of the model make the abstract concept of environmental conservation tangible, encouraging a collective responsibility to act.”
