Red Hot Chili Peppers have shared a new song called “Tippa My Tongue,” the first track they’ve offered from their forthcoming album Return of the Dream Canteen, out October 14 via Warner. It comes with a psychedelic video directed by Malia James, with animation from Julien Calemard and Thami Nabil. Check it out below.
Return of the Dream Canteen will be Red Hot Chili Peppers’ second album of the year, following April’s Unlimited Love. They announced the project in late July after bringing Unlimited Love’s “These Are the Ways” and “Black Summer” to Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. They worked with producer Rick Rubin for Return of the Dream Canteen and Unlimited Love after recruiting Danger Mouse to produce 2016’s The Getaway. The band members called Dream Canteen “everything [they] are and ever dreamed of being” in a statement upon the project’s announcement, noting that it’s another double album and that it’s “is easily as meaningful as the first.”
The band’s tour of the United States in support of Unlimited Love is underway, with the Strokes and Thundercat opening on most dates. St. Vincent takes the Strokes’ spot for the September 9 stop in Boston; other guests on the latest run included King Princess, A$AP Rocky, Haim, and Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals. The tour wraps up in Arlington, Texas on September 18, and the Peppers have yet to reveal if they’ll do another round for Dream Canteen.
Unlimited Love marked John Frusciante’s formal return to the band, which was announced in December 2019. Frusciante had departed the group in 2009, with Josh Klinghoffer stepping in as his replacement for more than a decade. Frusciante had last played on 2006’s Stadium Arcadium, and Klinghoffer appeared on both 2011’s I’m With You and 2016’s The Getaway.
Frusciante had previously been in and out of the band, taking a break between after 1991’s Mother’s Milk and continuing his hiatus through 1998. Dave Navarro took up as the Chili Peppers’ guitarist for those interstitial years, joining them for 1995’s One Hot Minute. In a 1999 review of Californication for Rolling Stone, the late critic Greg Tate memorably called Frusciante “the only ax slinger God ever wanted to be a Pepper.”
Frusciante played one reunion show with the band—a short three-song set at a memorial concert in February 2020—before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the live music circuit. In 2020, Frusciante issued a solo electronic album titled She Smiles Because She Presses the Button under his Trickfinger moniker. He also released another record, Maya, under his own name that same year.
