As the digital and physical worlds continue to merge, it’s easy to lose sight of the present moment. A new group exhibition at Pace seeks to reawaken our senses. Housed at the gallery’s recently expanded Seoul location, Your Present features the work of Korean artists Ji Hye Yeom, Heemin Chung, Sang-ah Choi, and Hyun-Sook Hong Lee, who comment on the current state of the world and what it means to be present.
Comprised of new drawings, paintings and video installations, each artist meditates on the threshold between the inner self and external forces. For Chung, who has a keen interest in observing how people exist in real and virtual networks, the artist presents an unconventional painting made up of acrylic, gel, and surgical steel chain on canvas. Dubbed When Our Palm Line Meets (2021), Chung layers seemingly disparate materials and motifs to express the relationship between digital images and painting.
Of the work on display, Ji Hye Yeom’s Symbioplot (2020) is arguably the most ambitious. The 20 minute video imagines an otherworldly symbiotic force that connects the power from all of life on earth. Harnessing the power from plants, life and the sky, the hypnotic artwork continues Yeom’s interest in human perception and supernatural phenomena.
Your Present continues Pace’s commitment to championing Korean artists in its expanding Seoul program. The exhibition opened today and will be on view until July 30.
