For fans of Nickelodeon‘s Spongebob Squarepants, marine biologist Christopher Mah recently shared an image of “real life” SpongeBob Squarepants and Patrick Star. Taken by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration remotely operated deep-sea vehicle, the pair of sea life were spotted on an underwater mountain called Retriever Seamount, around 200 miles east of New York City and more than a mile below the Atlantic Ocean.
Revealing their scientific names: Hertwigia (sponge) and Chondraster (starfish), Mah revealed that despite the colors being similar “most depictions of Patrick and Spongebob are incorrect.” Adding that sea sponges are more commonly orange or white in color and never in a square shape, while the carnivorous Chondraser starfish actually eat sea sponges.
