Heritage Auctions‘ most recent March 4-5 sale garnered $3,789,153 USD. With the help of one particular rare Pokémon card, which drew in just under 70 bids, the auction house was able to surpass previous records.
A 1999 first-edition holographic Pokémon Charizard trading card with a Gem Mint 10 grading sold for $336,000 USD, marking the most ever paid trading card at Heritage Auctions. The previous record was $300,000 USD for the same 1999 rare edition Charizard card.
HA Trading Card Games Consignment Director Jesus Garcia said, “This auction, especially the trophy-level cards, did exceptionally well. This sale reinforced the fact that demand for Pokémon cards continues its climb. We fully expected Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering to fare well, and they did.” The demand for the Pokémon Charizard No. 4 First Edition Base Set Trading Card drew the event’s top result due to the fact that it was from the Pokémon trading card games‘ first English print run. Only 121 examples hold a Gem Mint 10 grade.
Collectors also participated in competitive bids for a 1999 Pokémon First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box which garnered 54 bids and later sold for $288,000 USD. Magic: The Gathering cards continued to prove its popularity, taking up the other top ten sales in the category. A 1993 Magic: The Gathering Alpha Edition Sealed Starter Deck sold for $90,000 USD while the highly coveted MTG Beta Edition Black Lotus (Wizards of the Coast, 1993) BGS MINT 9 sold for $66,000 USD.
Heritage Auctions’ next Trading Card Games Signature Auction will be held on June 11-12.
