Rachel Harrison Distorts the Everyday in “Caution Kneeling Bus”

Rachel Harrison is a Brooklyn-based multi-disciplinary artist best known for work that tempts recognition but exists in what she describes as “forms that can’t be described.” Over the past 30 years, Harrison has used various objects found in popular culture to form abstract readymades, videos, photographs and drawings that comment on both the history of art and the social climate of the present day.

In “Caution Kneeling Bus,” Harrison marks the U.S. premiere of a new series of paintings made on the smartphone app, Scanner Pro. Instead of using the software to scan documents, the artist turns it to the three-dimensional world — disrupting the system outright — and processing the visual errors as artistic explorations.

Harrison’s work, according to the art critic Hal Foster, is “concerned less with exposing cultural myths than with retelling them, often in a perverse way.” Following her major mid-career survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2019–20, “Caution Kneeling Bus” is on view at Los Angeles’ Regen Projects until February 20, 2022.

Elsewhere, Chanakya and Dior partner on a series of textile artworks.
