Posthumous Lee “Scratch” Perry Box Set Announced

Posthumous Lee “Scratch” Perry Box Set Announced

A career-spanning compilation of Lee “Scratch” Perry classics will be released on September 2, shortly after the first anniversary of the legendary producer’s death. King Scratch (Musical Masterpieces from the Upsetter Ark-ive), the first major posthumous release from Perry, comes in CD and LP box sets with an illustrated book featuring an essay by the Perry biographer and reggae historian David Katz. It will be available digitally from August 26, with a double CD or LP available with a tracklist whittled down to the essentials.

The box set combines Perry’s most famous work with a haul of rare and unreleased DJ mixes, such as a previously unreleased mix of Junior Murvin’s reggae staple “Police And Thieves.”  Listen to Perry’s 7” mix of his song with the Upsetters “Jungle Lion” below.

In late 2021, the Vancouver doom metal band New Age Doom released Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Guide to the Universe, an unlikely collaborative LP and one of the last works that Perry—who took the mix on the record—recorded before his death. This year, the documentary The Upsetter: The Life & Music of Lee “Scratch” Perry got its streaming debut on the Criterion Channel.
