Posdnuos is celebrating 27 years of De La Soul‘s “Stakes Is High” by sharing its demo version — the one before J Dilla‘s involvement.
The artist took to Instagram to upload a snippet of the original “Stakes Is High” cut, “27 years ago 3 Long Island men gave you the Stakes is High and every one of those 27 years @wearedelasoul have been blessed with listeners letting us know what this album means to their lives.” Pos’ caption continued, “Thank you ! Thank you Jay Dee for “Dilla-nizing” our original version of the title track to make it into a Hip Hop sermon! #delasoul #thankyoudave #dilla #stakesishigh #27 #demo.”
Stakes Is High marked the group’s fourth studio album and featured guest appearances from Common, Zhané, Mos Def and Truth Enola. While production was mainly done by the trio, J Dilla hopped on the record to work on the title track for additional production. It went on the peak at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 4 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
