Portugal. the Man are gearing up to release a new album, and they’re pulling out all the stops to promote the project. In addition to sharing first single “What, Me Worry?,” the band has created PTM Coin, a cryptocurrency spin on the fan club.
Produced by Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Harry Styles), Portugal. the Man’s as-yet-untitled ninth album arrives in June. Thumping bass and swirling guitar fuel first single “What, Me Worry?,” which boasts extra star power from producer Ryan Tedder (Adele, Beyoncé), as singer John Gourley talks down his apocalyptic anxiety. “Happy as a clown/ What, me worry? / Houses burning down/ Don’t disturb me,” he sings in his famous falsetto. In the accompanying video, directed by Los Güeyes, flames rage as a riot erupts, but Gourley assures us, “I ain’t even trippin.’”
Gourley discussed the inspiration behind “What, Me Worry?” in a statement. “While recording this album and hanging in LA, we got into a conversation with Jeff Bhasker and Ryan Tedder about how much we missed laughter,” he said. “The last few years it’s been so easy to forget the fun in what we do. We talked about childhood memories of laughing at the world and ourselves while flipping through Mad Magazine. We missed those days and remembered that we all make music. So we took that afternoon to make a song about it.”

The music video for “What, Me Worry?” is available now on YouTube, but, because it’s 2022, Portugal. the Man have also created a social token to reward fans who pre-save the single. Upon saving the track, listeners earn 1 $PTM of PTM Coin, which, beyond the whole crypto economy thing, provides access to Portgual. the Man concert pre-sale codes, events hosted by the band, and archival live show recordings, B-sides, and demos. Fans must create a Rally account to participate.
Later this month, Portugal. the Man will hit the road with alt-j on a North American tour. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster. Last year, the band offered nostalgic covers of LEN’s “Steal My Sunshine,” Eels’ “Novocaine for the Soul,” and Metallica’s “Don’t Tread on Me,” and also sat down with Consequence to discuss how Nirvana’s Nevermind inspired them to play music.
