Photofairs to Launch New Edition in Hong Kong Despite Economic Rumblings

Photofairs is rolling the dice again, this time in Hong Kong. Just a month after pulling the plug on its New York show, the photography-focused fair is setting its sights on the bustling city during its high-octane art week. From March 26-30, against the backdrop of Art Basel, Photofairs Hong Kong will make its debut at the Central Harbourfront, the same turf as Art Central.

“Look, Hong Kong is a global art center uniquely positioned to welcome both regional and international art communities, making it the perfect location for Photofairs,” says Scott Gray to Artnet.

Fan Ni, the mastermind behind Photofairs Shanghai, will steer the ship for this new venture. Expect three distinct sectors: Main, showcasing the crème de la crème of modern and contemporary photography; Focus, a spotlight on solo and dual artist presentations; and Digital, where photography meets cutting-edge tech. The number of booths? Still under wraps, but applications are rolling in.

Hong Kong authorities are pouring money into the art world, with HK$15 million ($1.9 million USD) subsidies for Art Basel, Art Central, and ART021. But Photofairs? They’re going it alone, without local government funding. In a city known for its frenetic pace and relentless drive, Photofairs Hong Kong is poised to carve out its niche.
