Stepping into the iconic Dexter universe was no small task for Patrick Gibson, who takes on the role of young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin. In a new chat with Kyle Meredith, Gibson reveals the deep dive he took into Michael C. Hall’s legendary portrayal, admitting, “I must have watched the pilot of Season 1 15 times while preparing for the audition.” Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.

Gibson reflects on the unique challenge of balancing homage with originality: “It wasn’t about doing an impression — it’s about capturing the essence of Dexter while making him my own. Michael brought so much of himself to the character, and I wanted to honor that while finding my own way.” He even shares that Hall offered insights via email, including this thought-provoking tidbit: “The most relatable part of Dexter is his feeling that everything is an act — a mask.”

The series not only leans into the darkness fans love, but also finds moments of levity. Gibson notes, “There’s an absurdity to the show’s extremes that naturally brings out comedic moments. My mom even asked, ‘Am I supposed to be laughing at this?’” He also can’t help but gush over working alongside ’80s and ’90s icons like Christian Slater and Sarah Michelle Gellar, describing their enthusiasm and mentorship as “legendary.”
