One passenger was arrested after an assault on board a flight at YVR.

Richmond RCMP said they were told that a passenger had assaulted a travel companion, and airline staff had concerns the individual would be a danger to others on board.

“Richmond RCMP boarded the flight when it landed and after a lengthy attempt to de-escalate ultimately apprehended the passenger under Section 28 of the Mental Health Act,” said a statement from Richmond RCMP.

Police also said while the passenger was being taken off the flight on Saturday, the person was “actively resisting by biting and spitting” on officers. As a result, a spit hood was used. A spit hood is a mesh bag with an elastic closure that prevents the spread of diseases due to spitting but still allows the individual to see and breathe.

According to a YVR spokeswoman, RCMP were called to the airport on Saturday to deal with inbound Air Canada flight 297. That route flies between Winnipeg and Vancouver and as a result, the return to Winnipeg was delayed until 3 p.m.
