OpenAI’s Board of Directors Has Ousted CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI's Board of Directors Has Ousted CEO Sam Altman

Sam Altman has been booted from his post as CEO of OpenAI, the company revealed in a blog post. OpenAI’s board of directors had voted to oust Altman and temporarily replace him with Mira Murati, OpenAI’s CTO, who will serve as interim CEO.

“Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” OpenAI wrote. “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

Altman had helped to kickstart OpenAI in 2015 as a founding member. Over the years, he helped bring the company to fame, leading the launch of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

Murati, meanwhile, has worked at OpenAI for five years. The company wrote that, in her current role, she “already leads the company’s research, product and safety functions.”

While Murati serves as interim CEO, OpenAI will be conducting a formal search for a permanent CEO.
