OpenAI Is Assembling a Team To Control ‘Superintelligent’ AI

Many critics of Artificial Intelligence have expressed their concerns over systems rapidly advancing at a pace that even their own creators can’t keep up with them. OpenAI seems to share the same concerns and is now dedicating a team specifically to controlling AI.

The company is creating a team that will aim to solve the issue of “superintelligent” AI within the next four years.

“Superintelligence will be the most impactful technology humanity has ever invented, and could help us solve many of the world’s most important problems,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post. “But the vast power of superintelligence could also be very dangerous, and could lead to the disempowerment of humanity or even human extinction.”

The company goes on to say that it believes superintelligence will become a threat over the course of the next decade.

Led by Jan Leike and Ilya Sutskever, the new team intended the counter that threat is called Superalignment and will focus on building and training a human-level automated alignment researcher, which can then be used to assess and evaluate other AI systems.

The company says after creating its own AI researcher, it’ll build purposefully misaligned models to test the researcher’s capabilities to detect problematic AI.

For the effort, OpenAI says it’s recruiting “top machine learning researchers and engineers.” Those interested in joining the team can apply to join on OpenAI’s website.
